What would happen if tens of thousands of individuals started cracking for Team AnandTech?

Is that possible? Is it reasonable? Is it desireable? I say Yes, Yes, Yes!

Distributed computing is in its infancy, and the 600+ members of Team AnandTech are pioneers!

How far into the future, until Team AnandTech (or other teams for that matter) have tens of thousands of members, or indeed, millions?

Our team's power of 600+ members is vastly insignificant compared to the untapped distributed computing potential in just one State, or the USA, much less the World.

How is distributed computing going to evolve from its small "cult" status, and appeal to the masses, if "big players" and corporatations, in whole or in part, do not validate, legitimize, and indirectly publicise distributed computing by and with thier participation?

Distributed computing awareness is growing and could reach a "critical mass" wherein all distributed teams would benefit by a massive infusion of public interest and participation if the public masses can be enticed to embrace it.

Thus, in the long run, success for one team, is good for all teams, and distributed computing as a whole.

Conversly, attacking or disrupting another team, serves only to invalidate distributed computing and stunt its growth potential!

Relatively soon the RC5 challenge (our teams primary focus) will be over, and other distributed challenges will be started and met.

What then will become of our team? What will our goals then be?

Distributed computing projects have the potential to improve the human condition by merely utilizing idle computer time.

Therefore, do we as distributed participants have a responsibility to humanity, above and beyond the responsibility to our team, to expand the scope and magnitude of distributed computing as much as possible?

Let Team AnandTech and its members rise up to meet and fully embrace distributed computing by assimilating every computer and computer user that we are able!

Let not naysayers and defeatists have influence.

For we of Team AnandTech shall lead the way and show the world what we can become and achieve through distributed computing!

Go Team AnandTech!

ZapZilla !!!bravo very well put

I agree and support everything you say and lets give the 'naysayers and defeatists' a chance to fall by the wayside, and we will start searching for that next distributed project.

The real question is, how long until one of these companies use DC for profit? I know it's in progress but AFAIK none are paying clients yet. That will be the real motivator for people. I run SETI because I think it's a worthwhile project and it's fun being part of the team. I wonder how many more people we'd have on the team if they got a few $$$ at the end of the month for their output...

Rob - TA SETI since the start :)

Yes, direct $ would be one incentive, however, if Distributed Clients are in any way feared as harmful, or causing stability problems, or not secure by the general public mass, or not known, distributed computing will remain as a relatively small "cult" thing.

Embracement of distributed clients by "Big Guys" or corporations would allow for it be said by the masses that: If they trust and run distributed clients, what the heck I'll run 'em too.

It will be an interesting test of the future of and viability of "truely large scale" distributed computing if a corporation, or significant part thereof, will embrace a distributed client such as RC5.
