Alpha and Beta particles have to do with radioactive materials such as plutonium and uranium. They don't sell sunglasses for that stuff.

"beta type" polarization keeps out glare, just like any polarized sunglasses do.

These are cheapo sunglasses with polycarbonate lenses. The only added plus is that they're polarized. These prices are OK, but I wouldn't get hot and bothered over them.

Do you have a better deal? Or a better suggestion? I need good sunglasses but I don't want to pay a lot for them, because I lose them too easily

This may sounds stupid but after years of my wife losing cheap glasses she finally got some scrip ones and hasn't had this problem anymore. She thought I was nuts to push her to spend that much on glasses but now she just switches her regular with her perscription sunglasses in the same case and hasn't had a problem since....knock on wood. :)

I guess the idea is that if you spend a bit more on them you'll value them more and NOT lose them so darn much. Heh.

I thought the same thing and so I bought some expensive Oakley's ($80 on ebay) which I just lost over the holiday season actually. Thats why I'm looking for new ones right now. I am too forgetful, and will never spend that much on sunglasses again.

Heh. That makes sense in your case then AMDZen. Hope you can hang on to the next pair a bit longer. Good luck!

Go over to Campmor and check out their selection. They have the best prices on sunglasses (closeouts) IMHO.

I have to wonder, though, if the "alpha" they advertise would prevent viewing LCD screens. (radio, cell phone, etc.) The "traditional beta" will completely black out a cell phone or wrist watch at 90° rotation. I would guess that this "alpha" they speak of is simply the polarization rotated. Any guinea pigs or previous Contek owners?

I can't buy sunglasses on line because you can't really tell how wide they actually are. My head is kinda fat and if I buy the narrow ones they press against the temples on my head and make me pass out and hit the floor and break my nose. Then my head AND my nose is fat. Some things you just gotta do in person.

Just kidding about the fat head, but I like to buy my shades in person so I can see how good I look in them.

Found them for the same price as Amazon here (free shipping on $50) in case they should run out at Amazon. Haven't checked any ratings on this store though.

I too lose sunglasses every year or so, so I tend to buy mid-range ones for ~$25. I have to agree with Mathwiz that I can't buy sunglasses without first trying them on.

If you have a discount store like TJMaxx, Ross, or Marshalls, you can find a decent pair for cheap. Another option is an outlet store. There's a Saks 5th Avenue outlet near me that sells Coach sunglasses for only about $55.

it seems more plausible that they are talking about alpha and beta waveforms...although light follows neither of these....maybe it is keeping your brainwaves from leaving your face!!!! or it's just a crappy marketing scheme....one of the two

Thanks for the deal. I ordered the $19 dollar pair. Only the grey one's are that price, the green pair is still $100. They sound poretty good, with the brushed Al-Mg Alloy frame. I play a lot of tennis, and like to have decent quality polarized lenses. This pair sounds like its made for sports.

Really possible that the alpha and beta thing is teh polarization orientation(vertical or horizontal) or that the term is brought to us throught the magic of marketing department folks(like little elves) who thought it would catch our eye!

Nice glasses.

Just a reminder.
polycarbonate (plastic) lenses scratch very easily. I would definately get a case and a microfiber cleaning cloth.

FWIW, I have found that if you go in a Wal Mart optical store and tell them you need a cheap case for your glasses, they will probably give you a low end case. They perform their function just as well as a expensive case.

They give you these for free?

I have gotten free cases from Wal-Mart on more than one occasion.
Understand that they wont be alligator skin or anything fancy. When I asked about a cheap case, the sales person went to a cardboard box and handed me a black, soft case and said something like "here you can have this for free."

YMMV. FWIW, I tend to present a pleasant personna around strangers. Maybe this helped.

If you wear scrip glasses, get transitions - - best decision I ever made. Absolutely awesome in bright sun / snow (they almost turn black), and my fear that they would not lighten up indoors was apparently unfounded.
