I have 1 month disposable soft contact lenses that I am supposed to take out each night, then dispose of in about a month, and I have a years supply.... anyways, I just noticed I have had the same pair in for about 2 months now.... never been taken out. Ive had no problems and can still see well. Can leaving them in cause permanent damge to my eyes>? or is it bad in some way?

Leaving them in overnight will cause the contacts to dry out...causing eye irritation. Too much time left in, it'll probably fall out on its own.

dont ask... I was just thinking about contacts when I read another thread about brands of contacts.... I think i began not taking them out on a vacation or something where i forgot my contact case, and left them in and saw that I was fine afterwards

I've been doing this for years. I usually stretch a bi-weekly set to around 3 months.

AHH... But I take them out every night.
 
being a captain obvious here... but here is my plug : constant wear of contacts blocks off air from retina resulting in severe oxygen deprivation. my sister had it bad at one time and i was told she almost went blind from that. proabably a huge YMMV, but certainly not advisable to anyone 😱

I do, or else they'll be very dried out when I wake up from my sleep 😛
 
Hmmmm, Im not sure, I havent had any problems yet, maybe next time I go see the eye doctor Ill see if he sees anything, and then he will tell me not to elave them in

In all honesty, I've done this before too. A few times actually, and my eyes are fine. If it's all about air getting to the retinas... then what does keeping them out at night do? Your eyes are closed the whole time 😕

the doctor will ALWAYS tell you to take them out.

i wear biweeklies, and i always toss them out every two weeks, and take them out at night. better safe than sorry.
 
You will get scar tissue on your cornea. If the fact that you never remove your contacts is evident during your exam your doctor may not write you a new prescription for contacts.

To not write a new prescription? If they see that you are abusing your eyes it is their responsibilty to keep you healthy. They could also be liable if they see evidence and do nothing and in turn you suffer permanent damage to your eyes. My wife worked in an optical for 2 years, i've heard a couple horror stories.

Exactly right.

When I was young and irresponsible, I left my contacts in for weeks at a time. I rationalized that I "just didn't have the time" to mess with cleaning and enzyming them (this was back when enzyming took 3-4 hours). My eyes would get severely dry. After a while, I would even get bad photophobia (sensitivity to light - my eyes actually *hurt* when the sun was out). Once it hurt so bad, I couldn't even drive.

I went to my eye doctor for a routine exam and she told me that I had corneal ulcers. Additionally, the blood vessels in my eyeball were starting to grow into the iris (the colored part of my eye) due to oxygen deprivation (because I kept the contacts in all the time, my eyes couldn't get enough oxygen). She wouldn't write me a new prescription until the ulcers healed a bit.

After that experience, I rarely let my contacts go more than the two weeks I was supposed to wear them, and I'd let my eyes take a literal "breather" at *least* one full day a week.

If I had kept being irresponsible with my contacts, the blood vessels would continue to grow into my iris until they pass in front of my pupil (the dark area in the middle)... which causes blindness. And the blood vessels don't turn around and retreat from the iris after you start taking care of your eyes... once they're there, they're there.

You've only got one pair of eyes. Don't take them for granted.
