Contact lenses - AT Opinions

I've worn glasses since 3rd grade (will be a senior in college this fall) and got contacts at the 3 years ago. I like them much better than glasses (I get a new pair of glasses every two years, though, because I wear them at night).

I can't remember the exact figures, but I do remember that I pay almost exactly the same for contacts for a year as I do for glasses for a year.

I've not had any major problems with them, no. Every once in a while, I have a little trouble putting one in, but I just usually make sure it's good and clean and my hands are clean when I put them in and it goes right in after that.

I would imagine a new pair every day is probably best, but more expensive. I get 6 pairs for a year and wear each one for 2 months and that's just fine. I've worn some pairs longer than 2 months and not had any problems as a result.

If you're worried about getting the contacts and would like to try before you buy, you might try going to Wal-mart's vision center. That's where I get mine from and when I first got them, they did a contact eye exam (different than a regular glasses exam) and found the closest thing they had to my prescription and had me wear those for about a week to make sure my eyes didn't get aggravated, I could put them in and take them out all right, etc. After that, I ordered a box of my prescription and haven't looked back.

One eye required a lighter perscription than the other initially, but it has pretty much evened itself out with the other now. Other than that, nothing.

Edit: Damn linking bug!!!

Interesting. When I wore soft lenses I kept them in for about 16 hours a day. Over the course of a few years they screwed up my vision because they were cutting off the oxygen getting to my eyes. When I switched over to hard lenses, my prescription improved by 1 point in each eye in a couple months. I'm surprised the same hasn't happened to your prescription.

I am considering getting contact lenses after years of wearing glasses. I think I would like the lack of metal and glass on my face, but I don't know much about contacts. Hope you guys can help me out.

My main questions are (to those of you who have them):

1) How do you like them? Glasses or contacts, which is better?

2) What do you pay? Are they more expensive than glasses?

3) Have you had any trouble with them

4) What ones are the best? Daily, weekly, monthly?

5) Any brands that are the best, which ones are the worst?

Thanks.

1) I like my contacts better, because you barely feel they're in, and you have full peripheral vision. Contacts I can get the prescription changed more easily as well.

2) I paid about $120 for a year supply of Optima FWs. I do not replace them every two weeks though, so they last considerably longer. When I used Focus Dailies, they were about $110 for a 90 day supply.. Big difference in price.

3) Never had trouble. Been using them for over five years, and never had trouble.

4) It really depends on how much you're willing to spend and how lazy you are. If you have money, go with dailies. Don't have to clean them and you can just toss em in the garbage at the end of the day. I prefer b-monthlies because they're cheaper, and I use a pair for about a month instead of just two weeks.

5) Don't know about brands. I've had Focus Dailies and Bausch & Lomb Optima FWs. When I switched to the Optimas, it took about a day to get used to them since they're a little heavier than the Dailies. Go see your optometrist, they'll be able to find you the right stuff..

When I turn 22 though (my optometrist says eyes may still develop during your earli 20s), I'll be getting laser surgery though.. :\

1. i LOVE my contacts. i'm keeping them. i don't have to worry about dropping them, leaving them, scratching them like i did with my glasses. i know they'll always fit my eye/face and i can wear sunglasses!

2. i pay a little under 20 a box, four boxes at a time through 1800contacts.com

3. only trouble i would have is that they were for a while just popping out of my eye but it was only that pair i wore. i hate it when that happens - i would NEVER have any solution/drops with me and i'd have to force it back into my eye if i wanted to see. the amount of times it happened in class...

4. i wear biweeklies and i love it. throw them out every two weeks. i'm one of those weirdos that actually does throw them out every two weeks, and not trying to get as much use out of them as possible. i also have soft ones, which are much more comfortable.

5. i wear biomedics because acuvues don't fit my eyes. that's why you need a prescription - the contact needs to fit your eye comfortably and also if you have astigmatisms, you may be able to get a toric lens for your eyes. they also check a week after you first get the contacts to wear. the first week is a definite adjustment period - i found myself blinking a lot and giving myself tons of time to put my contacts in each morning.

i wear acuvue's also which i'm suppoed to chnage every 2 weeks. To me, glasses are much more comfortable. Maybe cuz i have dry eyes. Basically it feels like there's a sheet covering my eye. Sometimes it's worse, very uncomfortable, someti's it's ok. On occasion, it's kinda unbearable, leading to headaches, etc. It feels very refreshing when i take them OFF and put on my glasses. Still, i wear them every day almost, or whenver i go out. So they're worth it. But just lettu know it might not feel so great to wear them.

1) I like them a lot. There are times when I just feel the need to wear glasses (usually during allergy season or when I'm tired), but overall they're much better.

2) I pay $150-$200 for a year's supply, but I have a really funky prescription.

3) Only trouble I have is when I don't wash my hands before cleaning them or taking them in/out.

4) I can only get ones that last 3 months so I wouldn't know

5) again, I can only get one brand so not really sure.

1) Like contacts, greatly prefer over glasses (wore glasses age 4-15, switched to contacts through current age 23).

2) Mine are more expensive because I am very nearsighted as well as having bad astigmatism, but for me they are worth it. In general they aren't so expensive.

3) Initially I had some problems with light sensitivity, but I adjusted and don't have any problems anymore

4) I have to use quarterly or yearly, but I would prefer biweekly.

5) Trust your optometrist - it really depends on your vision and your individual eye. Acuvue seem to be pretty good, but they should give you a trial to see how well it works with your eye. I'm happy with my CooperVision.

1) Contacts>Glasses - unless you're not going out (glasses are lazier)

2) $90/Yr w/ Site for Sore Eyes (also get free solution for the whole year)
Contacts$<Glasses

3) No trouble

4) Daily is best but is the most wasteful/expensive

5) No preference.

1) How do you like them? Glasses or contacts, which is better?

Contacts

2) What do you pay? Are they more expensive than glasses?

Less in the longrun

3) Have you had any trouble with them

No.

4) What ones are the best? Daily, weekly, monthly?

Daily throw away every two weeks, never wear ones that you sleep in. Ever.

5) Any brands that are the best, which ones are the worst?

Acuvue 2.

would it be a problem if I where lenses when I'm playing video/computer games? I tend to keep my eyes open the entire time while playing(w/o blinking) so when I'm done with a game my eyes burn.

well, I wear contacts (and they are awesome! glasses are so annoying IMHO) and sit in front of a computer pretty much all day for my job. Yes, if you keep your eyes open, you're eyes will get red alittle bit but mine never get irritated or anything. I always have my trusty bottle of rewetting drops by my side as well. couple drops moistens up again and all the redness goes away.

I wear contacts as well and perfer them more. Like everyone said they are comfortable and you dont have to worry about glasses and its easier to see cause you have vision all the way around, where as glasses if you look to your sides you dont have the glasses so its out of focus so to speak.
I wear acuview2 as well. They are very good. No problems very comfortable, cheap, and you can leave them in longer then the 2 weeks they perscribe. I only have problems in the moring when im waking up, if I dont pay attention I will put 2 contacts in one eye or something dumb! 🙂 Go for it. Be patient dont give up if it takes you awhile to get them in your eyes. Try em You will like em

I do the same I dont blink often when im on a game or computer, You just have to take a break and look away from the computer and give your eyes a rest. i do it at work as well. I take my break and go outside and make sure my eyes aren't bugging out.

1.) They are better than glasses imho.
2.) $50 every 6 months per eye... I have an astigmatism
3.) Not really, only when the air is extremely dry and I've been wearing them longer than 8 hours does it irritate my eyes but rewetting drops help.
4.)Monthly
5.)Using Focus Toric bought from visiondirect.com which was cheaper than elens.com or 1800contacts.com

Can anyone comment on hard contacts? Are they more comfortable than soft lenses? I've worn soft lenses for 2 years and they irritate me. Wore glasses for past 3 years. I would like to return to contacts but comfort is really important for me.

i would never go back to glasses.

i have the new day/night contacts...they're great!

i don't know how much it costs b/c of insurance...but something along the lines of 70-100 bucks 6 months? I dunno, the only trouble I've had is if i left them in too long (old kind not the new day/night).

Seeing as how I'm in the vast minority with hard lenses, I'll offer my perspective on them. At first when you blink you will feel the lenses. Kinda feels like there's an eyelash or something in your eye. Takes about a day, maybe two for your eyes to adjust to the lenses. After that, you really don't feel them all that much. Occassionally you can feel them move when you blink. They're just re-seating themselves on your eye, no big deal. Also, sometimes they can un-seat them selves and travel to the corner or bottom of your eye. That's only ever happend to me while taking them out. And if you fall asleep in them, your eyes will hurt and the lenses will get a hazy film on them. I've fallen asleep with them in once only for a short amount of time and it hurt like hell when taking them out. They basically glue to your eye. Overall, they're just as comfortable soft lenses and offer a little better vision correction. Since wearing hard lenses, my prescription has actually improved slightly. Only major complaint is sometimes I get halos around things, but it hardly ever happens. If you're willing to take the time to adjust to them, then they're just as comfortable as soft lenses.
