I am considering getting contact lenses after years of wearing glasses. I think I would like the lack of metal and glass on my face, but I don't know much about contacts. Hope you guys can help me out.

My main questions are (to those of you who have them):

1) How do you like them? Glasses or contacts, which is better?

2) What do you pay? Are they more expensive than glasses?

3) Have you had any trouble with them

4) What ones are the best? Daily, weekly, monthly?

5) Any brands that are the best, which ones are the worst?

Thanks.

Daily are suppose to be the best.
and you throw em out basically at night.

I use bi-monthly ( 2week)

it's much more comfortable than glasses.
about 16-18 bucks a box ACUVUE2 ( per eye ) for 3 months

badthing is when you have allergies... it's a pain in the ass.

I like them.

2) What do you pay? Are they more expensive than glasses?
1800Contacts.com

3) Have you had any trouble with them
Nope.

4) What ones are the best? Daily, weekly, monthly?
Dailys because they are really weeklys. Otherwise biweeklys are best imo.

5) Any brands that are the best, which ones are the worst?
Usually yur optie will tell you which ones work best for you.

Yur welcome.

I have acuvue 2 contact lenses...works wonders! They say they are only supposed to get 2 weeks wear...but i ususally can go a month or 2 before throwing them out and replacing them. Less expensive to replace as well if you lose them, and since like playing sports and doing active stuff, its not a big deal for me to throw one out or lose one.

It will take some getting used to, thats for sure. Give it a try, and though you might get frustrated at first, dont give it up! In the end, the metal will go away and you will be able to do things without worrying whether or not your glasses will fall off.

1) Tons better than glasses
2) I wear hard lenses so they cost $65 a lense
3) No trouble at all. Really sucks when you loose one though.
4) When I did soft lenses, I had monthly ones. They were nice. Easy to put it and if you tore or lost one, you had another right there.
5) For my soft lenses I had Acuvue. Not sure who makes my hard lenses.

1) How do you like them? Glasses or contacts, which is better?
- I love contacts, they f-ing rock :)

2) What do you pay? Are they more expensive than glasses?
I pay 17 bucks for about a months supply of contacts (what the doctor says), but I can wear the same contacts for a little more than 3 months at a time, so a box of them lasts me a year ;)

3) Have you had any trouble with them
Nope, I have two week disposables that I just never take out, I sleep in them, etc. My current pair has not been out of my eyes in over two months.

4) What ones are the best? Daily, weekly, monthly?
Weekly :)

5) Any brands that are the best, which ones are the worst? Thanks.
Accuvue 2 - nothing compairs :) STAY AWAY FROM FOCUS DAILIES, the will eat a whole in your pocket and aggravate your eyes even more.

1) For me, I contacts feel more natural even then glasses I can't even fell them when they are in. The main reason I got them was because I kept losing my specs.
2) Usually about $20 a box from 1800contacts
3) If you were one pair too long, they can become uncomfortable, at which point I toss them.
4) I use bi-montly, and although you are supposed to switch them every 2 weeks, I have no problems wearing them up to 2, even 3 months. I believe their was a huge class action lawsuit against one of the companies about false advertising. It turned out they were selling the exact same lenses under the daily, monthly, and weekly labels.
5) Accuvue 2.... The one I was prescribed and still use.

1) Contacts >>>>>>>>>>>>> glasses, except for late night coding/neffing sessions. I can wear sunglasses when driving, play sports, and ... well, I'm just so damn sechksay with 'em :D
2) Hmm ... about CDN$130 a pair (permanent lenses), so not much more than glasses at ~CDN$110 w/decent frames.
3) Had one tear in the eye. God, that sucked ass.
4) Depends on how much you're willing to clean them to save $. I'd go for monthly if you're a contact lens n00b, then shift to the perm lenses when you're confident.
5) No brand affiliation here. None needed, IMO. Don't buy that new Accuvue2 advertisment. :p
6) You're welcome. :)

I wore contacts for about 9 years and just switched back to glasses in November.

Pros:

Don't have to wear glasses that get dirty, etc.
Looks better than glasses for some people

Cons:

Easy to get stuff in your eye
Eye infections/irritations more likely
They can fall out sometimes for no apparent reason

I can't think of anything else at the moment, but it's up to you ultimately. Good luck if you decide to go with it!

I've been wearing night & day contacts for about a month now (without ever taking them out) and they have been wonderfull! They cost a bit more than normal contacts (about $75 for two boxes), but they are well worth it.

I too use Accuvue contacts... I'd probably say that I wear them about 50/50 compared to my glasses. It just depends on what I plan on doing that day. And I rarely wear my contacts once I'm in for the evening.

The most important thing about contacts is that you MUST TAKE CARE OF YOUR EYES! Too many people do damage to their eyes, simply because they are too lazy to take them out, clean them, whatever.

I was one of those guys until my eye dr refused to give me contacts because of the damage. I was pretty close to permanent scarring. I went a few years w/out wearing contacts, and fortunately, my eyes healed.

But yeah... Get yourself some contacts. They certainly have their benefits. But also keep a current pair of glasses.

way better than glasses cuz your peripheral vision is much much better plus they may be able to get more accurate than glasses. as for which ones, if you don't have an astigmatism accuvue 2 is fine as long as they have your prescription available. some lenses fit some people better than others. as for how long you can wear them... well, the big concern is eventually they deform. and if you wear lenses for too long each day your eye can't breathe.

That's exactly what I'm talking about...

Do you realize that you are starving your eyes for oxygen? What happened to me, was that my capillaries grew, in an attempt to get more oxygen. They almost grew into my iris, which would've been permanent damage.

Considering the risk you are putting on your eyes, what kind of benefit could be worth it???

(Btw... Your eyes aren't indestructable, y'know.)

Holy crap, how did I miss that the first time around? :Q

Soak your eyes in saline and take those out. Now.

Either that, or face severe health hazards, to your vision and general well-being. An eye infection is nothing to laugh at.

I'll believe it when I can't see it ;) Hehe, lame joke. ;)

I've have the same doctor for over three years, and I've been keeping them in for that same amount of time too. I've told him that I do it, and although he still advises me not to do it, he says there in nothing currently wrong with my eyes ;) I just wake up every morning and put the overnight soaking solution in my eyes as eye drops, it works wonders :p

1) I love mine, much more convenient and less obtrusive than glasses. Once you put them in, you pretty much forget about them, which can be a good or a bad thing (see # 3)

2) They are more expensive than glasses, considering you have to pay around $250 every year (for dailies atleast)

3) The only trouble ive had is sleeping with them in. Its easy to forget about them, and your eyes get pretty crusty if you sleep with them in overnight.

4) I prefer dailies, just because you dont have to worry about cleaning them, or losing one.

5) Focus Dailies, work great for me.

Thanks for the great imput guys :)

From what I see they are cheaper than glasses, considering I paid roughly $300 for my last pair of glasses.

One more question:

Looks like soft are most popular, are they more comfortable than hard lenses?

Again, what's the benefit vs risk?

That you save a whopping 20 seconds a night???

I've been there, and treated my eyes EXACTLY like you are. Just because there is nothing "currently" wrong with your eyes, does not mean you aren't causing damage.

Again... What's the benefit?

It takes your eyes a couple days to adjust to hard lenses but after that you don't feel them. When you first start wearing them, it feels like you have an eyelash in your eye. Drove me nuts till I got adjusted to them.

And why do you need to do that? Because your eyes cannot produce the necessary moisture, and your lenses are dried out.

Lenses can transfer oxygen because they are made of mostly water. When they are no longer soluable, how can your eyes get air?

After two months, you'll never convince me that they can transfer air properly. This is why your Dr advises you NOT to keep them in.

Seriously... Are you really that lazy that you'd rather put your eyes through the torture, than take less than a minute per day to take care of them???

How much has your prescription changed over the years?

One eye required a lighter perscription than the other initially, but it has pretty much evened itself out with the other now. Other than that, nothing.

Edit: Damn linking bug!!!
