Contact Lenses - a struggle

I've had this exact problem. What I've discovered is that the solution I used was as important as the brand of contacts. I am extremely far-sighted and have bad astigmatism, so that limits my choices. I've landed on softlens 66 (66% water). I used a no-rub solution, but I rub my lenses before and after wearing them. I used eye drops made by bausch & lomb for sensitive eyes. I cannot use any solution containing polyquaternium (Opti-Free calls is polyquad), as I seem to be allergic to it. Even so, it takes me a long time to adjust to wearing my contacts daily. Try to find a high water percentage brand and then experiment with solutions.

Focus Night & Day are the best lenses ever made- They're so air permeable that it's like wearing nothing at all, and you can sleep in them, swim, have monkey sex, anything!

If you're having eye problems with lenses, especially soft lenses, you're probably getting lint on them when you're putting them in. Try this:

Open your lenses and put them aside. Wash your hands, rinse, then DO NOT DRY THEM. Flick the water off and put your lenses in. You might be getting lint from your towel.

BTW- lol at -4.0 being bad. I have -8.5 in each eye---BEAT THAT BABY!

I am -4.25 in my right and -5.25 in my left. I have been wearing contacts since I was 15 which was 15 years ago. I started out with normal soft lenses but for the past 8 or so years I have been wearing disposables. I do notice that now my eyes are a bit more sensitive to protein buildup and it's not as comfortable to wear them for as long as I used to; i.e. I typically take them out at 10pm at night and I hate sleeping with them in.

I hate wearing glasses and prefer contacts. When I first started it was a pain in the ass, but now I have no problem sticking fingers into my eyeballs.

I can wear them, but I'm usually too lazy to put them in so it's glasses 95% of the time for me.

Go to an ophthalmologist who specializes in contact lenses. (They exist) I used to get really bothered by my contacts... I could feel them on my eyes, I'd continually get head aches, fluorescent lights bothered me and so on. I went to the ophthalmologist and told him what was bothering me, and he recommended me a pair (Some obscure model) and all my complaints have gone away. I love contacts now. Before the pair the ophthalmologist recommended, I had Acuvue with Hydraclear plus or what ever that crap was. They were terrible.

My ophthalmologist does the same job as an optometrist, but with all extra things ophthalmologists do, I'm not sure if this is a norm or not.

I used to drink my mom's saline solution when I was a kid.

Wait, thats not what we're talking about here, is it...

Mm I have contacts but I never wear them. I have an issue with them becoming blurry after only a couple hours (from what I assume is protein build-up). Because of this, I just went back to glasses. Glasses are also very nice in regard to being easier to put in during the morning, which means I get ready to leave at an earlier time. Sometimes I simply had issues putting the contacts in, although it wasn't always too bad.

Wow, great timing on this thread. I just got contacts for the first time in my life a few days ago. Still trying to get use to them. The first day after the doctor, trying to get them in was a complete nightmare.

It literally took me over an hour to get them in. Some of that time was spent searching for a dropped lens, and some of the time was spent flipping out punching the wall in frustration.

After 3 days I was able to put them in in under 10 minutes this morning. I can definitely notice something in my eye which is weird and slightly annoying. Also viewing the computer screen up close is a little blurry and "washy"... if that is a good way to describe it.

I had problems viewing computer screens as well, which for me is completely unacceptable. I kind of work on computers, so I kind of need to see them 😛. My first time was also pretty bad and took me awhile... after I was done, my eyes were quite red! I've found it easier to angle my finger in horizontally rather than vertically like I've been told by all of my optometrists.

-4.75 both eyes here using Acuvue2 lenses. I just got a sample pair of Oasis ones I need to try but my optemologist said they may be uncomfortable since they're slightly smaller.
I used to have Biomedic disposable lenses a few years ago. Durable as hell but they were so thick my I couldnt wear them late at night since my eyes would dry out by then.

How in the world do you swim with contact lenses... I mean yes I swim but keep my eyes closed. I tried to open them once and lost a contact lens in the process. I always thought of getting goggles so I can see underwater.

I can't wear them comfortably. Eyes dry out and irritated real quick. I am OK with glasses, been wearing them since childhood. I am -6.75 and steady, haven't changed prescription in 5 years. Maybe I'll get Lasik, but I am worried my eye irritability and infection proneness will make it hard to heal.

+1

I have worn these for the past 10 years (now 25). I'm -2.75/-2.75.

I use Panasept solution, which is basically NaCl, Hydrochloric acid and steam distilled water in a custom purifier. Very few chemicals and absolutely the best solution out there.

Mind you, I'm going to see my opthalmologist at the end of the month, and I'm going to talk about the possibility of getting LASIK.

I'm -6.0/-5.25 and have been wearing contacts since I was 11 (now 25). Glasses actually bother me much more since I can't see out of the sides top and bottom. Acuvue Oasys for me leave my eyes much less dry (even though I used the regular Acuvue for years). I also work on the comouter all day.

Are you also on any daily medications that may be drying you out.. allergy, decongestants, etc?

I used to have asigmatism in both of my eyes, the contacts corrected in and also slowed my prescriptions from getting worse and worse.

Yeah I'm -5 in both eyes, started wearing them when I was 10 (now 27) and I can't stand glasses.

I cant remember my exact prescription I think it is something like 1.25+ and 1.50+ in the other with astigmatism. I started wearing my contacts every day when my dog tore up my new glasses in December. The only problem I have is that when I first put them in EVERY time for the first hour or so it feels like an eyelash or sand in my eye. Then all of a sudden the annoyance goes away for the rest of the day.

I wish I could figure out what is happening, a friend mentioned that sometimes you need to turn the contacts and it fixes the issue. I have taken them out and inspected them and see nothing wrong with them; no tears or debris in them.

I don't struggle putting them in or taking them out. But my eyes struggle with comfortably wearing them.

I think I have naturally somewhat dry eyes. No contact I've ever worn has been comfortable all day. And some days are better than others. Some days I can wear them all day without much discomfort, but I'll usually need some contact eye drops at least once those days.
Other days, they get some uncomfortable, or even irritated feeling, that I start to get tired feeling likely because my eyes feel like they are trying too hard to see. So I usually take them out even after only a few hours wearing them, and might put them back in later in the day whenever I leave my place.
See... I wouldn't wear contacts for those reasons, if I weren't kind of vain. 😛 I'd much rather wear contacts whenever I'm in public than glasses, but once I'm home, most days my eyes would rather have my glasses on.

I do a similar situation, I rarely wear mine to work since past experience at work caused my eyes to hurt, however going out in public or going out to a club I am going to put them on and go do whatever I planned on and then go home and take them back out even if that means putting them back in 3 hours later to go out again.

I make 'em. Never wore them. If you're having trouble with dry eyes, have you tried GPs? They tend to help keep the eye moist by allowing more tear exchange. Vision is generally more stable too.

Your eyes are feeling the edges on your contacts. These will soften up with use, and your eye will get used to the sensation (your eyeball actually will start to conform to the shape of the lens). As for your close vision not being as sharp, that's common. It has to do with the refraction distance of your lens of something like that.

Yeah, this has to be my biggest gripe with contacts! People always ask me if I need bifocals because when I look at something close-up, I always look under my glasses because the object is FAR bigger, clearer, and crisp because there's no lens (contact or glass) in between. I know two ladies at work who wear only ONE contact...just so they can see up-close with the other! Granted, both of them have pretty good vision and corrective vision is not a requirement for their daily activities.

That said, I am -8.5 in one eye and -8.0 in the other. I just started wearing contacts about 1.5 years ago and have been very satisfied. I have never seen under water with goggles until last summer because I couldn't really see anything that was farther than probably 3-5 inches from my face! It was amazing and I went snorkeling for hours my first day at the lakes. 😉

Fritzo, you seem to have very bad vision as well. What kind of glasses do you wear? (lens size) I don't like wearing mine much because the curve of the lens to correct my shitty vision is so severe, it bends everything I look at out of my peripheral. If I need to see clearly, it has to be straight in front of me dead-on or it is a little blurry.

As for contacts, I use Acuvue Oasys and they work pretty well. My eyes still get dry after a few hours, but rewetting drops are my friend.
