Router: NETGEAR WNR3500L-100NAS

Switch: TRENDnet TEG-S80G Switch 8-Port Gigabit

NAS: 2x ReadyNAS Duo v2
one for photos / documents (RAID 1). Another for media.

Devices:
  1. Desktop (10.7.2)
  2. Apple TV
  3. MacBook Pro
  4. Netbook (Ubuntu)
As you can see there won't be many devices on the network. The aTV will be accessing one NAS mostly while the MBP and desktop work with the 2nd NAS.

Currently I have my router in the living room with the TV, aTV, xbox connected to the router. Then a cat6 cable to the bedroom where it goes into a switch which my desktop, MBP, and printer connect to.

Now if I am working on photos off of my NAS on my desktop does the data first go to the router then back to my desktop? Or would it be beneficial to connect that NAS to the switch?

Also should I upgrade my router or switch soon? Just don't want it to bottleneck my data transfer speed.

Thanks!

Put the NAS for the MBP and desktop on the switch in the bedroom. The traffic will stay at the switch.

Put the NAS for the aTV on the switch because you have to (no more router ports, correct?)

If you "upgrade" anything, I recommend a switch for the living room. everything would be gigabit from room to room. A single 100Mb link to the router.

This is exactly the same setup I use in my basement to connect two rooms. Lots of video usage and it works great.

None of the traffic makes it to the router unless it has to. Default Gateway and all :)
