Say you work for a company as a freelance consultant and this company ask you to travel to their remote office which is 200 miles drive away. Do you charge them for the hours spent on the road to get to that location?

I am asking because another consultant in the company told me he gets paid for travel time but the manager told me that the company does not pay for travel time. Just wondering which is normal.

TIA

you have a written contract?

No contract with them. It's my previous company and just doing some freelance on the side for them, didn't know it would turn out like this.

So I am just wondering if you guys normally get paid for the travel time.

ouch, no written contract, then you get what you get

and you can try anything, if you feel you should be paid for travel, then submit your invoice that way. if they refuse to pay, then you are SOL since you don't have a contract

you might want to move on if you can't get a written contract and they start screwing you over

Charge for time, plus mileage.

You are on the clock when you step foot and drive.

-edit-
Unless T/E is included in the contract

Tell them to pay for your benefits if they want your travel time for free. All of the consultants I know get paid for their travel time (plus mileage and/or expenses.)

200 miles = about 3-4 hours driving time one way? Should be paid time.

But if your manager says you're not going to be paid for it, then you'd need to ask yourself if the job is worth it. That's too many hours to give up for nothing. What if you're only there two hours? Put in a 8-10 hour day for two hours pay?

I get paid for travel time. My company does not bill the end customer for the time but they bill travel costs.

When I travel for a client, it is a door to door charge.
Out the house door until I get into the hotel door.

My company bills travel time at 50% to clients. I can use 100% of my travel time to meet my 40 hrs/week, if necessary. But I log travel time at 50% billable hours and get paid for every hour I bill over 40.

EX:
Work 30, Travel 10 = Bill 35, Paid 40
Work 40, Travel 10 = Bill 45, Paid 45
