Pretty much anything w/ a broadband connection will work. Heck, pretty much anything w/ a dial-up will work! just don't plan on leavin' the house or getting any phone calls for the next day or two if you start a movie d/l - the ripping on the other hand just depends on how much time you have and how much money you have to spend. The faster (typically more expensive) the system, the quicker you'll be able to rip. - It looks like you're working w/ a limited budget but I'd still bump up the RAM to 512 otherwise you're gonna be stretchin' the sys resources pretty thin.. and if you can at all afford it, get a more powerful PSU.

I just bought my amd 64 system and watached cpu usage resources etc and as for downloading agree with you almost anything will do the trick as I don't break 10% cpu usage.

As for Ripping this process seems to take a long time on my 1gb DDR400 winchester 3000+ requiring an equiv or better...perhaps even a dual core for use later allowing video capture playback (as well as ftp/antivirus/etc ) to run smoothly and concurrently.

So I am cought in the two extremes....if I don't want to piece a dual core system while the prices are so high then I was of the opinion just buy the cheapest sff parts (I revised the motherboard to a 939 socket) until I go dual core and then just drop my winchester in the sff and use a dual core for gaming.

The other consideration is if Intel truly handles encoding better and I can get a Hyperthreading processor to stay below the temperature of the sun ...would this be a better route?

I am Ripping DVD's mostly to move to my media center and eliminate the need for the disks.

I would Look into a 16X DL Benq or NEC, they are much better burners and may only be about $10-$15 more.

are you just ripping to iso? or are you ripping and converting to divx/xvid?

ripping depends on drive speed. not cpu

I am ripping from DVD then converting to divx or avi/mpeg to save space and since my tv is not HD ready I can't really tell the difference in quality so far. I am trying each format and watching the movie to see which quality/size ratio works the best for my TV.
