constant system freezes, possible heat problem

hi- lately my computer has been freezing and resetting itself quite frequently. within the past month or two it started to act kind of weird, and occasionally would lock up, and within the past week or two the computer has started to constantly freeze or reset itself. sometimes it gets in a loop where it doesn't even start to boot into windows, but resets itself again and again shortly after the POST. i think it might be a heat problem. until recently the computer wasn't in such a well ventilated area, though i had never had trouble before. it started getting hotter here recently which i think might have caused part of the problem. anyways, using motherboard monitor, i found that my 1.4 ghz athlon was running anywhere from 60-65c, and the case temp was something like 45c, which is a bit too hot i've been told. i disassembled the fan unit (thermal integration thermoengine) which turned out to be quite dusty, and i cleaned it out and re-thermal greased the cpu die. it has since been running slightly cooler (55c) but i'm still getting very, very frequent lockups. i can't really use this computer anymore. it's been suggested to me that my cpu may be heat damaged. is this the case? what kind of utility would i use to diagnose the issue? thanks

/edit: running winxp pro, i haven't really done anything to it that might cause a problem like this to crop up, psu appears to be supplying the correct voltage so i don't think that's the problem, i dont know about my motherboard but i think it's ok

The hallmark of heat-related lockups is you should see a pattern in the timing of the lockups relative to how long the computer has been running. They should be pretty regular, of course taking into consideration cooldown time since last run and ambient temperature, and consistent in the way the happen. If you are getting a variety of symptoms, heat may not be the problem.

daveshel- i would say there is a correlation with how long the computer's been running and lockups. there's also a correspondence between system activity and lockups..i.e opening an ie window is probably ok but starting vice city or something will lead to a freeze or restart within 2-3 minutes.

considering i hadn't had this problem before, with the same setup, for the last 2 years or so...do you think anything might be damaged? or should i just look into more fans or something.
