I got a problem here and need the help of you wizards... one of my systems has suddenly started freezing. It doesn't happen during use, either, it happens when the system is sitting unused, just idling. The whole this is frozen and will only respond to a hard reboot.

I haven't changed anything lately, and checked my IRQs, no conflict. Ideas?

System:

Athlon 1GHz not oc'ed
128MB PC 100 ram
Win98SE

Got the freeze, eh? Well, it's no wonder you don't have many responses. This is one of THE most difficult areas of computer repair. Here we go again, LOL:

1) Have there been ANY changes to the system as far as drivers, software or new hardware that correspond with the freeze?

2) If no, open the case, remove and reinsert all cards, ram, cpu and cables. Test the system for the freeze.

...I'll be baaaaaaack (cheap Arnold voice) after you answer this...

Power management? You check those options? Turn em off in windows and the bios & see if that keeps it from locking up.

try running windows with as little apps in the background as possible. run msconfig, and remove all the useless apps that get loaded during startup. this site may help:

also, get the newest drivers for all your hardware.

is there a possibility of heat problems with your system?
