constant rebooting

My computer was behaving normally until I decided to do a reboot and now it reboots right after the Windows XP logo. It never gets to the desktop. In addition, it ignores my floppy drive when I try to use a boot disk or change my boot device to anything. It always just goes to the hard drive. One idea I had was that I might have caused a problem when I canceled a windows update half-way through installation. I havn't rebooted since but things worked fine days after that. I suppose it could be a virus even though I have virus shield, firewall, etc...

I thought I would just reinstall operating system but there's the problem with it ignoring floppy, CDROM as primary boot device. I have another HD I could attach, but does it allow you to install an OS to another nonprimary HD?

any ideas?

Have you tried setting BIOS to defaults? You might want to try Safe Mode (press F8 when booting) and see if this indicates and errors, if not try Safe Mode with Networking as this should enable you to perform any Internet updates. If you can get in, do a virus scan just to be sure

I think we'll need to get the boot from CD-ROM problem fixed, if you reset the BIOS can you boot from a CD or Floppy? If so, boot the XP CD and see if it can do a repair install

Cancelling a Windows update halfway thru is a bad idea.

Go into the recovery console and then uninstall the Windows update that you cancelled; that may allow you to get back into the OS and is a quick and easy fix to your issue with a minimum of downtime.
