Constant Lock Ups

I'm getting tons of lockups with firefox, and just random stuff including games. Mouse freezes, complete and total lockup, sound goes fubar and loops.

System is same as my sig, but with 2x512 now to take the 4x512 out as a possible issue, i have a 7800gt now also.

Temps are fine, memtest86 was stable for 27 hours last night. I was trying an overclock at 2.5ghz, 250htt *10. Temps were fine, never higher than 50c. I was getting these lockups so I clocked everything back down. (I did have similar lock ups prior to the o/c so i don't think thats the issue).

Almost seems like its a firefox conflict. A few times I heard a clicking noise just prior to the crash.

Now that I think about it, I had my raptor up in the 5.25 bay for a few months, mounted on foam to silence the thing. I think it got pretty hot up there, lacking airflow. Could these lockups be because of that? I now have the raptor suspended right infront of the intakes so its very cool.

Scan disk her.

LOL I don't know I use 2000.

I think they changed it to checkdisk... right click on drive > properties somthing somthing somthing you'll fiqure it out.

Yeah, you right click the drive and go to properties, then tools. Check Disk is what its called.

Did it, and no problems.

I lock up faster during gaming than just firefox or whatever else. Temps are all very cool.

If you suspect the HDD fails (and set everything back from OC to normal) then try to use a different HDD and install XP on it. It won't take long to do that on a rig like yours. Remove the Raptor for the time of the test ofc. Before that You could also try to use your comp with one stick at a time, see if it's stable with any of them. Could be a memory stick fails.

Are you sure that all heatsinks, especially for the chipset and CPU, are secure and the fans are working correctly?

I guess thats the next course of action. I'll find an extra HDD to try that on. I can't help think it might be the motherboard also. I do want to get a DFI board, but I don't want to drop a ton of cash on one and then still have to pay to fix the issue because it was something else.

Its not the ram. I'm sure. I tried it with 4x512 (memtest86 stable 27 hours), 2x512, and now 1x512 ddr333. All have the same problem

Once I had problems with my comp and turned out the SATA cable got damaged and caused all the problems. I know it's not likely but it won't take much effort to swap it if you have a spare one. Fortunately the chance that a cable is damaged is very small so likely it's not the problem you have.

You haven't forget to connect all the 24 power pins to the board, have you? Not sure if your PSU has a 20 pin or a 24 pin connector.

My PSU is a native 24 pin PSU, its 20 pins plus a detachable 4 pin section. I had the 4 pin section not plugged in for a long time because a plug remover tool had broken off inside of it, however I recently got it dislodged so its running with 24 now. The other 4 pin is also plugged in.

I'll try another SATA cable for the hell of it, I noticed in the motherboard manual that you're not supposed to have sata cables folded at 90 degrees or more, and that might have happened.

Looks like there is a bios update for your mobo that addresses compatibility issues with NVIDIA cards. I know it's not much but... check if your bios is newer than the one that says "- Improve compatibility problem with nVidia graphic card." That's version 1.6 2005-6-24. Any luck yet btw?

No luck so far, I'm at my gf's now with my computer, I may try her power supply, then her mobo.. etc.. try and narrow things down.

I'll check my bios version.

I'm looking at SiSandra... and for some reason, when I go into the properties of each CORE, it says the voltage is 2.10v?? Is this normal??? Its giving me a warning.

However, its set to 1.35 in bios, and Core Center shows 1.32-1.35.

No, it would be pointless, as you said it already contains the patches introduced with the older release.

However....

Arghh...

I didn't know that 7800GTs have a power connector... 🙂 I never actially saw one up close.
So there is a great chance that the line you are using for your card is overloaded (HDD, optical drive etc might be connected to that line). Try the following options: 1., try to remove everything from the line that is connected to the the video card 2., try to use a different line and make sure nothing else is connected to it.

I and my friends had problems with that a lot of times. It started with the first cards that had power connectors on them. There is a great chance that your problem is exactly this.

You HAVE connected the power connector on the 7800GT to the PSU, haven't you? 🙂

So just try what I said.

I have a 6 pin connector (pci-e video cards only) directly from the PSU. There are 2 connectors on the line for SLI, however I'm only using one. I DO have the connector for people don't have a direct line, where you plug two molexes in.

I could try to put the card on a molex line by itself using the adapter.

I just did a search of that BSOD, and it seems a lot of people are getting that same error with Audigy 2's... I'm going to look into it.
