My harddrive is having consistant activity even with no programs loaded. I used adaware to remove all spyware and I disabled the indexing service. Is there a program or something that will tell me what program is writing and reading from the hd?

Thanks

Constant how? Occasional flicks every so many seconds or always on all the time and you can hear the hard drive being accessed?

I just ran into a system at work that was running the hard drive non stop and found out it was kazaa. Uninstalled it and the problem was gone.

Run "The Cleaner" from moosoft.com to check for trojans, etc that Norton and other AV's may not find.

Good advice there...

Also make sure that no software is set to 'auto-update' like your Anti-virus definitions, or any media players etc etc...

And go into scheduled tasks and disable all the scheduled tasks (you can always run these when YOU want... windows has this annoying habit of doing stuff at the wrong times unless you change the settings)

Lastly press control-alt-delete and see what is running in the background... you can also goto the start menu-run then type msconfig and disable as much stuff as you want from loading when you boot up, be careful not to disable stuff that you're unfamiliar with or it may have adverse effects... alot of stuff is safe to disabe tho...

All these little things should help.

It should be the CD-ROM, not the HDD like you would think. The LED indicator is for the IDE channels.

There used to be a thread on how to diable it... it's gone now and I can't remember the fix.

Thanks for the responses. I can hear the harddrive being accessed. I installed the cleaner and it didn't pick up any trojans. I don't have any scheduled tasks. I'll try uninstalling kazaa.

Grab filemon from sysinternals.com, it should give you an idea of what process is writing/reading.

did you check to make sure that you do not have system restore enabled

go to control panel - system - system restore and click on turn off systems restore on all drives - this is probably what is causing hard drive access when not doing anything

Thats not likely it, sr isn't going to cause constant activity. Worse, you shouldn't be blanket telling others to disable it.
