Constant computer crashing... help

This has been happening for a week or so now and it keeps getting worse and worse. First of all, when my computer turns on successfully, the display is formatted very weirdly at startup... a rectangular block in the middle is a violet color while black bars surround it from left and right side; this display corrects itself to the size of my monitor after a second or two however with a crackling sound that is coming from my monitor or my chassis; I can't tell which. Secondly, I'm begininng to see thin white lines going in a diagonal direction when my display is pitch black (such as when windows loads up with a black background). These thin white lines leave after the black background is gone but I'm wondering why they are there.

Ok, now here is the main problem... when I turn my computer on, everything inside the chassis sounds fine but I often get a "No input connection" display from my monitor so I have to keep trying to reset over and over again (I made sure the cable to the chassis and the monitor is secure) to get the display to function. I may have to do this once or it may not go on after about 5 tries when I just give up trying and go do something else. However, even when I get the display to function, it often freezes during windows loading (the display just freezes... the computer is still running). THEN, even after that, if I can get past the loading screen, the display randomly freezes up while I'm surfing the internet. Strangely enough, however, is that I don't recall a time when the display has frozen on me while playing a game...
This has gotten out of control, and I'm really frusturated. I think the problem lies with either my monitor or my video card but I'm not positive. My monitor is an IBM P75 21" Monitor and my graphics card is a used (my friend gave it to me, there wasn't anything wrong it it but he got a new card and I had a really crappy one) Geforce 4 MX440.

Anyone... help?

sounds like you have a video card that is dying...what kind is it? see if you can borrow a good one to test it out....

I have the most updated drivers for my GFX card, I believe... updated like a week ago. Does anyone know when the new ATi GFX cards are coming out, by any chance? It's probably time for me to upgrade, anyway. 🙂
