By your location, you mean the location of the cell tower.

Ever hear of triangulation? If you're in range of 3 towers they've got you down to a few feet. It's how they get your location when you dial 911 if your phone lacks a GPS, and in most phones with GPS it's a backup method.

Why not take 5 minutes and learn about this stuff? Its nothing complicated and it will make people realize that you can always be tracked. The only thing different about location based services is that you can access them instead of only the authorities.

not a thing

Location based services are what people have been wanting, so its what has been delivered. The ones complaining the most are the ones who don't use the services. Those of us that use these services regularly like the benefits and don't have a problem with someone storing my location.

Just please...please help me find me keys when I lose them!

(PS. I just used Google's location service to find out where my son is. It worked great and I'm happy its available)

Huge distinction between real time location services and the saving of historical location data available for extraction. Don't recall people wanted this

But what does it matter for those who aren't doing something illegal?

They already know what city I'm in, what could Apple possibly do with this information that is not illegal itself?

I'm honestly curious.

I just looked at mine and it's so useless it's hilarious.

Basicaly it said I was somewhere in Kelowna and on a highway about halfway to Vancouver (it can't specify where, just a bunch of spots scattered) then suddenly one day I was at Silverstar Ski Hill about 60km away which I've never been to in my life.

You have to go through Vernon to get to Silverstar, and it doesn't have me tracked as being in Vernon ever, even though I have been recently. I've also been in Vancouver, Kamloops, Penticton, and as far as Omak in the USA but it doesn't have me pegged in any.

Maybe for Americans it's more accurate but for Canadians it's useless.

Please inform me of a plausible way to provide location based services without logging location data.

Just a few...

Make the location where the file is stored small so it can only hold a little data.

Give users in settings an option of how many days to save the data.

but it would still be logging data

The whole uproar over this isn't how much data, just that the data is there.
