Do you *really* need that much sh!t to run Microsoft Excel/Word?

Silly, those Conroe Core Duos, dual raptors in raid 0, SB Xi-Fi Fatality (with the ram on it), killer nics, PhysX, and dual Geforce 8800 GTXs in SLI are used to run only CounterStrike 1 (the one based on the half-life 1 engine).

Dude, I need my 8800GTX to run Zork.

I actually find myself spending far more time watching TV than gaming these days in my spare time since I acquired a TIVO. If any of you guys do not own a DVR, I suggest you pick one up and I can recommend some great TV shows that are on right now. TV seems to be better at the moment than gaming, at least for my story driven RPG tastes (only thing that looks hopeful seems to be Dragon Age, but The Witcher might luck out). People seem to drool over Bioshock, but the people that I have talked to say that the story / character development does not come close to PlaneScape: Torment.

This is why I download my TV shows. The HD TiVo is not cheap and I can't justify the cost for the handful of TV shows that I watch. I'll watch the shows that I can get on HD-OTA though, but I also can't justify $50+ for a cable bill to watch a handful of shows.

As some others have said, go look at the current list of games... maybe find a friend that has a game that you're interested in and ask if you can try it out. I pretty much base a console purchase on a made-up number of games that I want available that relates to the price. For example, the Wii would need the least amount of games (probably 1-2) that I want to buy it, because it's the cheapest. The 360 would need 2-4 games for me to buy it because of the higher price tag. The PS3 would need around 3-5 games for me to want to buy it. Although, if I can get a good deal on one of the consoles, I'm much more tempted to buy one.

As for my personal recommendation, I'd say check out the 360. It's been out for the longest, which typically translates into more games (and in this case, there are a lot of decent-to-great games). There are also a ton of arcade games which can be fun to play for just a little bit (pick-up games, just games you play on a whim). I still think that the Wii is going to suffer from gamecube-itis at this point. If you look at the games, most of the good titles are from Nintendo, which is one of the problems that the Gamecube had (poor 3rd party support). The PS3 simply doesn't have a good amount of games out that appeal to the masses or a killer app at this point. Although, if you can get in on a good deal, it might be wise to pick one up. I still have my SonyStyle credit and if the $400 model comes out, that'd be a good deal for me to jump on.

Now the PS3...you may think that it's some magical expensive hardware, but did you know that people buying the cheap version of the console DID NOT get the Emotion Engine? That means their games are dumbed down...that's right Sony skimped out in the hardware dept. UT3 is scheduled for Feb 2008 and the biggest benefit for 360 gamers playing this game is XboxLive which kicks the crap out of Sony's lame network. It won't look worse, the game uses the same engine that Bioshock and Gears of War used (both Xbox360 games). They ran fine didn't they? Thought so.

The first 4 words of your post fit you to a T. The emotion engine isn't in any of the systems anymore, it all uses emulation, which is in fact BETTER and not "dumbed down." With the emulation you can do upscaling to higher resolutions. You can call it "skimping" if you wish, but it actually helped consumers.

UT3 will come out for PS3 first and probably won't hit 360 for a while after that and it won't run as well (as stated by Epic games developer in interview seen on GS) I am curious to see how much worse it's going to look on the 360. Also, you can still get in on the sonystyle ps3 deal.

Or stick with the PC and Xbox/PS2. That's like 1000 9/10 or higher games to keep you happy/busy.

No room to talk when you push games as one of the reasons to buy a PS3, list games that are cross-platform and mention that the blu-ray player in the PS3 is supposedly worth $900 if you purchased a similar device for the PC... however a simple NewEgg search will show a blu-ray burner for ~$500. Then there's how you mention the USB cable to recharge the controller but fail to mention how the battery cannot be replaced by the end-user once it cannot hold a charge anymore.

I still don't see much of a reason to buy a PS3 at this point. Unless you want a cheaper blu-ray player that is. Maybe when/if the $400 model comes out, it will give a boost to the reasoning if some good games also follow. I've actually been looking at some of the upcoming games and one thing that bothers me is how people want to throw SixAxis controls in. I was looking at Folklore and you have to "yank" on the controller to pull the powers out of the enemies. I obviously haven't tried it, but I have a strong feeling that it will be quite repetitive and really be classified as an unnecessary use. Although I guess I might have more of a reason to buy a PS3 if I were a MGS fan, but alas... I'm not :p.

If 10% of the people who cheerlead for the PS3 on the internet actually went out and bought one, Sony would not be getting their hats handed to them by Nintendo and Microsoft.

Microsoft went after the game developers this gen and its paying off.

Well, I know he doesn't actually own one, because he said earlier that he's just "thinking about getting one" or something to that effect :p. Microsoft did do well with the developers in this round, but they still have some issues to work out other than the typical issues (the lack of sharing wireless technology is becoming an annoyance).

So yeah, just think about the games and take a good look at each consoles features. I think you'll know by then which one you'll want to get, if at all.

Not owning a PS3, what is this (I'm assuming like ipod)? I know with my xbox 360 I can turn the Xbox 360 console on and off with my control pad so I never even touch the console.

Although... is there a way to get back to the dashboard from a 360 game? I have to turn the console off then back on to get back to it.

You can just rest your finger over the power/reset and eject etchings to use them.

You can turn on the PS3 with both the controller and the remote.

No, but seriously, the way PC games are going in terms of insane requirements to get a game to run at decent settings, well it's just going overboard. I should not be getting 20fps at 1280x1024 on a 8800gtx in Crysis.

Seriously, why drop $500 just to play Halo3? And like several others have admitted above, that is just the INITIAL layout, not including all the extra nickel and dime charges on Live for extra content that can be had on the PC for FREE via user contributions. However just imagine how fantastic multiplayer FPS games would be on your PC? Too bad nobody had ever though of it before. Heh, wait a minute...

Kind of the same boat. Own a pc, play games like Team Fortress 2, UT3 (beta), WOW.
Also own a wii. Got that in June, and it collects dust due to lack of games. Have a bunch of games for it, but none really hold interest. Games like Madden 08 are full of bugs, and the online play is buggy, so I don't spend much time with that.

Am considering a 360 though, would love to move time away from WOW and onto something else, like a 360.

I don't know... I'm on the fence about it. It is interesting to have a feature like that, but one thing is... some people do not like losing the feeling. Meaning we can tell that we push a button because the button depresses. So it's kind of weird.

I found that after I stop playing WoW, I have very little desire to even play other games. That's why if you look at my rather large 360 library and then ask how many I've beat... the answer is 0. Well, it could also depend on your idea of "beat." I've beat Dynasty Warriors: Gundam with multiple pilots, but I haven't beat it with every pilot yet in both modes. I've also beat Samurai Warriors 2 with a couple different characters. Most games I've opened but never touched or only played a level of (like Gears of War). It looks like the next game I'll end up beating is Ratchet and Clank.

That is what I did. I sold my WOW account and used the money to buy a 360. My wife is much happier lol.
