Console Sharing

Is there any cheap way of doing this? a KVM Console Sharing switch is pretty expensive ($290us just for the switch)then add cables, and it's looking like a $400 setup. Basically the company is looking for a way for two different people to be able to enter data on the same computer, why they don't want to just buy a second computer, I have no clue. 🙂

I'm not sure how that could work because both people can't be on at the same time. What's the current situation right now? Is there one full-time person that always occupies the computer and they want a part-time person to enter data while the full-time person is sitting at his/her desk? If you have a spare computer lying around, then you could try out VNC. It'll allow the part-time person to connect to the full-time person's computer and remotely enter data. Hope this helps.

the computer is currently in a small manufacturing facility where the workers enter the start/end times and materials while working on a particular project, for costing purposes. They want someone on the other side of the plant, about 50-100 feet away to be able to enter data, w/o walking so far away from their job. Since it's only a matter of using the computer for about 2 minutes at a time, they figured it would be better to share the computer than build another. i think their Switch is full right now, so they'd have to expand that, plus get a computer, plus by an OS, plus by another liscence on their database program. If they can just share the console they only have to buy that, another kb and another mouse.

another question.... let's say they could find an old cheapy computer, and just split one port on the switch using say a 4 port switch... Is their a VNC program available on Linux that would allow control of a win98 PC? This would at least save them the price of a 2nd OS and 2nd database liscence (i think they are using access).

I believe there is a Linux version of VNC. Check it out here.
