Are the current visually attractive games such as GTA 4, DIRT and Assasins Creed the max the 360 can output.
Or will the graphics get eventually better.

That's bizarre logic. Why would having a strange architecture make something inherently more powerful?Originally posted by: BD2003

Yes, it will get somewhat better, even for the 360. Although given how strange the PS3's architecture is, it probably has quite a bit more untapped potential than the 360 at this point.

Take the Xbox vs the PS2 - the PS2's architecture was by far the weirder of the two, and it's generally considered to have been the weaker console as well. Same thing for the Saturn vs. the PS1, for that matter.

The PS2 was a lot less powerful than the Xbox as well. I think that had more to do with the poorer graphical quality than the weird architecture.
I think the point is that the PS3's Cell processor may be weird, but it's really powerful in theory. If developers can tap into that, the PS3 has a lot of room to grow. But it comes down to game developers. The PS2 got some great looking games, but I think that's mostly because it was so popular for so long, so it got more attention.

I never thought I'd say this, but the latest generation of consoles have actually managed to quench my thirst for graphics.
I've always considered myself a graphics whore, and figured each time the bar was raised, I'd find myself waiting for the next leap. But games like Gears of War, Call of Duty 4, GRID, and Assassin's Creed are so well stylized that I've stopped caring about photorealism. It will sure be cool as hell when we get there, but I'm not on the edge of my seat anymore. Perhaps part of it is that each of the games I just mentioned had a strong focus on GAMEPLAY, which probably has the side effect of making the game feel like it looks better than it would otherwise.
Ramble ramble...
That said, we'll probably see more out of the PS3. Like someone else said, devs don't know how to best harness its power yet. The implication (which was misunderstood by a reader above me) is that, if they can make games that look as good as they do today, imagine how much better they'll look when they figure out which way is up.
The 360, on the other hand, has probably been tapped for the most part. Games like COD4 and GoW are likely pushing the envelope. I have no technical basis for this opinion... it's just a baseless theory.

Where they have and will continue to succeed graphically on the Wii is through creativity and art direction - SMB, SSBB, Okami and other highly stylized games are just plain beautiful. It'll never be able to do realism as well as the others, but it can push out some fantastic graphics nonetheless.
