Console gaming really is a race to the bottom! Death to Consoles!

So I finally gave in and got a PS3, mainly for the blu-ray player.

While I was at it, I picked up a copy of COD MW2, mainly because I have a friend who plays it pretty often on PS3, and because I heard the PC version was a crippled PS3 port anyways (no dedicated server, only 6v6 teams, etc).

I immediately noticed that the graphics quality was far below what I was accustomed to in recent generation PC games. Namely, it looked "fuzzy" on my 1080P 42" HD TV.

Now I know why: The game is only pushing 600 pixels of vertical data. LOL. LOL.

http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/22/call-of-duty-4-not-hd-only-600p-claim-pixel-counters/

It really is true, console gaming is a race to the bottom.

Is the game fun? eh, yea its pretty fun for an hour after work or something. But it really is like stepping back 2-4 years in terms of graphics, team size, and customization.

PCs forevar! I think the only other Console game I will ever buy is Dust 514, and *maybe* Uncharted 2...

I'd never buy a console as a replacement for FPS style games if that's your primary style. And I'd never buy a PS3 if online gaming was a huge part of my gaming.

That being said...as someone who did PC gaming for longer than many people on this forum have been alive...I haven't touched a PC game since getting my 360 & HDTV.

I for one enjoy both my PC and my Xbox 360 for gaming, but I tend to stick to single player games on PC since there's so much rampant cheating. The Xbox 360 is the best platform for multiplayer games today.

The problem with some PC gamers is that they're so elitist. Please go to the PC gaming forum and rant there. You will probably find a lot more people to agree with you.

That's your problem right there.

What PC games do you play? I almost totally abandoned PC gaming but I've gone back lately to a few RTS/RPG games.

Actually, I love it as a blu-ray player. Zero complaints. And as a media streamer/netflix streamer. And I like CoD on it, I just am not impressed, esp with the graphics.

Surprisingly it's been a while since we've had a good ol' fashioned console vs PC flamewar (not that we need any more or this bait thread).

I have a PS3 as well, but if your primary reason for buying one was the blu-ray player, then you made a bad decision.
There are a number of blu-ray players out there now with better video quality, streaming support, and infrared remote capability, among other things.

Don't know why this debate always pops up. PC graphics will always provide higher resolution than console graphics. Just the nature of the two platforms and it's been that way since the beginning.

Console graphics became acceptable to me with the introduction of the Dreamcast and have only gotten better since. Prior to that, I was exclusively a PC gamer since the SNES.

However, console gaming provides abilities that aren't capable with the PC such as multiplayer couch gaming. Pick your trade-offs.

NEWS FLASH - PS3 came out over 3 years ago, XBox 360 over 4 years ago. It IS 4+ year old technology. Only a complete technology nimwit would expect aging consoles to keep up technologically with state-of-the-art PCs.

Here's the kicker...while those PC gamers are spending $1000 or so every other year to upgrade their machines to be able to push the state of the art, console gamers pay somewhere between $300-$600 every, oh, 4-8 years on a new console.

And that's not a stab at PC gaming - its a simple fact that its ahead of the curve of technology (wasn't crysis barely playable on the best hardware when it came out? I recall Doom 3 was back in the day) - but that technology comes with a price.

Ditto (except for Torchlight for my CULV laptop). I absolutely do NOT miss feeling the need to upgrade my system in order to play games. More and better eye candy + details are always nice, but the Xbox is running quite well for tech from 2006. We'll probably be approaching diminishing returns in the near-ish future.

+1, between my wallet and my sainity, I migrated to console gaming and haven't looked back...much. PC gaming on a tiny screen in a dark decrepid room of despair can't compete with sitting in an easy chair playing on a 40"+ screen, but RPG/RTS games SUCK on consoles, the reason I've been playing a few PC games lately.

I play XBOX in my desk chair and use the same 32inch TV as my computer monitor/xbox monitor. This is usually because I need a mount point for my steering wheel for forza, however.

This. I pretty much did the same thing. Bioshock 1 on the PC was the last straw. Got tired of all the DRM issues and bugs in PC games. It was costing me a fortune to try and keep up with the hardware. I'd rather buy games than parts. Bought a PSP at first, loved it. Then moved to a PS3. I haven't really looked back. Steam though has changed things a bit since I can get PC games for cheap. Still, the PS3 is my primary gaming platform.

I hardly ever play RTS (I suck at them) but on PC let's see... lots of Steam deals, mostly older games. Mass Effect 1 and 2 are the big ones for me. BioShock was the last big one before those. And I played a lot of COD4 on PC, but not anymore since there are hardly any servers and most are hack-fests (just like MW2).

The only thing I play on the PC anymore is EQ2 with my wife; she still plays quite and we play together now and then, and probably quite a bit now that the new expansion is out.

PC games are such a pain in the arse compared to consoles. Hardware compatibility problems, broken DRM, NAT configuration problems, expensive hardware requirements to play at those amazing resolutions that PC gamers brag about. Firing up the 360 and playing online with friends is so mind numbingly simple I'd never go back to the PC. I used to play Civ4 with a friend online and it was such a pain in the ass just to connect to one another sometimes. Civ4 is 100x the game that CivRev is, but dealing with the headache of PC gaming can't bring me back.

Previously PCs ruled because of their internet capability. With online service now being a standard on consoles I doubt I'll ever go back the PC.

I was gaming on my PC on my 40" HDTV. What's with people thinking you can only do it on a console? Is this argument for real? :hmm: My HD4870 was light years ahead of my Xbox in terms of graphics. But I dropped it anyway. Why? I got tired of having to tweak stuff, fight with games not starting and now enjoy a "insert disc, install to HDD, play" scenario with every game. No tweaking no nothing. It just works. DLC is also a few buttons away.

Now, I got used to the lower resolution, hardly any AA, low quality textures and noise coming from my Xbox... And if a game looks totally shit on my Xbox, I just don't buy it. What I like about the Xbox is zero frustration. And it almost always overweights the shitty graphics and fan whining I'm getting for using it. I don't really mind as long as I can just sit down and relax. Not to mention some games I want to play come only on consoles (Bayonetta and Alan Wake to name two).

You should at least download the demos for Ratchet & Clank TOD and Valkyria Chronicles.

I'm not a graphics snob so I'm still able to enjoy games like Planescape: Torment, Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines and Persona 3 FES, but to each their own.

Alan Wake isn't on ANYTHING yet... don't count your chickens before they hatch. Many games have been pushed back time after time only to result in vaporware.

Why did you link to an article from 2008 about Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and claim it's about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2?

Well, except Alan Wake actually looks like it is coming out. Only a couple of months from release. It may get a delay for a couple of months like Batman:AA did but I'm willing to go ahead and say that Alan Wake is definitely coming out for the 360 this year.
