Yeah...I noticed that! Mine doesn't ship until like next week :p We're a Premier Customer and a Dell reseller too!

Great Deal! I have been waiting for a Hard drive deal for some time. Once again this forum has made my wallet lighter and my wife madder. Mine too says May 1st for shipping. They must be bombarded with requests.

Mmm....160 GB of RAID goodness. My 80 GB setup was started to get cramped with all the video captures I've been doing (moving all those VHS archives to video files). This is a wonderful way to get more space. And like others have said, it's close to the $1/GB mark, so that's my cue to buy!

There are two threads on this deal, is there any way to get a moderator to combine them?

I'm a little worried -- some of the drive's specifications are contradictory.

Highlights:
* Rotational Speed: 7200RPM
* Average Seek Time: 9.5ms
* Average Latency: 5.55ms
* Buffer Cache Size: 2MB
* Spindle Start Time: 10.0 seconds
* Interface: Ultra ATA/100

Average latency (measured in ms) can be calculated as 1000 / ( rpm / 60 ) / 2 = 30000 / rpm.

7200rpm drives should have a *much* lower average latency, something like 4.16ms.
5400rpm disks have an average latency of 5.55ms.

You don't have 7200rpm disks with that latency, one specification or the other has to be wrong.

Also, the seek time seems kind of high. Has anyone gotten their drive yet, or called Dell to see exactly what it is?

I just spoke on the phone with a dell representative. He says that these are definitely Seagate drives; he couldn't tell me the model number, though.

That limits this disk to one of two possibilities (looking at this list of 80gb disks Dell uses http://support.dell.com/us/en/docs/index.asp?cc=7&ct=28):

80000MB - Seagate Barrcuda ATA IV (ST380021A) (if the rpm listing is correct)
80000MB - Seagate U Series 6 (ST380020A) (if the latency spec is correct)

The Barracuda is a decent, though not great, drive; I'd wager that this is the disk. If the 7200rpm listing is wrong & this is a U Series, it's a dud. I doubt this is the case, though, it seems more likely that they just got the specs wrong for the Barracuda.

Wanna make the deal even sweeter?

This drive kinda rang a bell and I did some searching around in old posts. Turns out there is a rebate on the 80gb Seagates for $25 bucks.

So...........

If this drive is a Seagate, maybe we can get it for $68 bucks AR

Worth the stamp to try. :D

I would hate to have to wait 2 weeks just to turn around and send it back because it's some 5400RPM model.:(

Careful on this. The drive serial number is going to be Dell branded, not Seagate so the rebate might not fly. Caveat emptor if the rebate is a big part of your decision.

i don't think you'd be able to apply a rebate, you wouldn't get a upc code to cut out from dell

Dude-you're getting a WD, er Dell. Just received my drive, it is the WD 800BB. So much for wishing to a 'Cuda. Anyway, an 80 gig 7200 drive for less than $100.00 is nothing to sneeze at.;)

Yep...I just got mine. It's a Western Digital WD800. Sweet! (do people still say that?) Thanks!

Yee Ha! Just arrived. WD800BB. Checked the warranty through WD, and there is none. Only Dell warranty on this one. Oh well. I can live with that. Three years would have been nice though.:confused:

I received mine and checked the warranty thru WD...none.

But the strange thing was the P/N that came back on the result page for the S/N that I put in showed that it is a WD800JB-00CRA1 ! ! ! (Special Edition, 8M). I double checked the S/N. The P/N on the label says it's a WD800BB.

Can this be true? Is this an error on WD's database? Can someone verify with their drives? I haven't installed the drive yet, I wonder what my computer will say?

So either this was made up or the rep didn't know what he was talking about. ;)

i have installed the hd and its definitely a WD800BB. Still a great drive. Isn't this drive better than the Seagate that we were expecting anyways?

Yeah, the rep actually told me in person that it was a Seagate, but that he didn't know which model -- kind of suspicious. I should have guessed that he had no idea what he was talking about.

I found it on the Dell Small Business site but it looks like the discount has changed to 10% off . BTW the last time I bought from the Dell small business site, I had to pay sales tax ( I live in Atl GA ). I guess I am too late for this one will need to look elsewhere for a 40-80 gig 7200 rpm HD (? ).

Since dell cancelled one of my orders and it took me four days to get a 2nd order in, I have an order dated on 4/26 (a WD 800BB) and an order based on 4/30 (a maxtor Z740X). Anybody have info on this 740? now that they're different drives, I know I'm not going to RAID this, but I don't know which one I should keep and which one I should sell. Can i get some info? I checked the info on the sites, and it seems like this brand-new maxtor drive outperforms the 800BB in every category but I can't find an internet review of the new Maxtor. Some help please.
