I have a Linksys Wireless router. I have one laptop that connects to it. The laptop has a Linksys card, or a Lucent/Orinoco card. If i have WEP enabled with a 13-digit ASCII password, or the shorter password, i can not get an IP on the laptop. I've tried manually configuring the lappy, using either card, and if i turn off WEP, it works no problems. Any help???

I have found it is much better to use the HEX keys insted of ASCII keys.

does the authentication complete but you get no IP, or are you hung up authenticating?

ive tried using both HEX and ASCII keys, and because i'm letting windows control the authentication/connection, I'm not sure. From what i can tell, i get authenticated. It pops up a window saying "connected to XXXXX, signal strength: Excellent" I even checked on the DHCP table on the router, and the laptop is listed, with an IP. I had the same problem when setting up my neighbor's network.

nope... none at all. It gives either "invalid ip address (0.0.0.0) or the auto one 169.254.xxx.xxx, which doesnt work

I came across your problem while researching my own at the SMC. According to SMC addtional zeros must be inserted into your hex key in front and back to make it work. Go to smc.com's support and read their wireless faq. If someone can only resolved my issue.
