Consistent USB device boots

With the advent of UEFI, 'boot from device' proceses seems to have changed. What boots up a pre-UEFI bios system often seems to choke on a UEFI system. I have 2 UEFI boards here (Asus Max Hero and a cheap Gigabyte GA-H81-D3). Both have inconsistent results when booting from USB or CD.

The 'bios' have secure boot turned off, legacy device booting, etc., yet these two machines experience difficulties that I don't have when device booting to pre-UEFI era boards.

Is there a 'one fits all' method of booting? Or even a 'One fits all UEFI' method? Is there a certain firmware or software required for UEFI USB boots?

What am I missing?

Thanks for any help.

Not sure if UEFI will become a standard. As you can see in the news that WIFI standards when typ N came out that not everyone kept on the same page thus everyone gave bad reviews when trying out a type N wifi card on a different brand WIFI router.

So I suspect the same here with UEFI is going though the same issues.

"Rufus is a small utility that formats and creates bootable USB flash drives, but not DVD discs. What makes Rufus different is that it offers 3 different partition scheme to target the system type, such as those UEFI based computers. You can make a bootable drive that can directly boot off on a UEFI computer without turning the Secure Boot off."

Hi inachu. Thanks for commenting. You may be right but my feeling is here to stay (for a while, anyway...).

Hi Burpo.
I use Rufus and have used it in a few circumstances for UEFI. Sometimes it works fine, but I have had a few issues with it in this curcumstance.

Your suggestion has made me realize I may not have taken it as far as I could. Would using rufus to create a win 7 install flash drive with the GPT scheme from an MS iso allow me to do a non-UEFI install (to an mbr drive)?
I hope that's not too convoluted. Thanks!

Thanks again, Burpo (for the link, also). I guess the next step is to 'acquire' the time to put into it to flesh it out. Much appreciated. 🙂
