Considering some surround setup

I've always used classical stereo setup and was perfectly happy about it, but ever since I started playing Battlefield 3, the surround idea has been growing in my mind. I guess gaming (which I probably always will do) is the only reason why I would like to upgrade to surround (I don't think the situation would be too different for movies though).

I also have to point out I am pretty much a complete audio virgin. I don't understand the jargon one bit, and barely am aware there are things like active/passive speakers (which consist of one or more speakers /or what are those called/) and some amplifiers etc. That's just to illustrate you have to get some patience and talk to me like to a retard about this :p

Anyway.
Several years ago I decided those little plastic computer speakers are junk even for my deaf ears (I honestly cannot tell the difference between 128kbit mp3 and CD quality) and bought Tapco S8. They sound great (well, compared to what I used all my life up until that point at least), but when I was ordering them, I must had been drunk or blind, because they are simply HUGE to be placed on a table. The result is I have them sitting pretty much in the face, which is not exactly ideal (I understand there has to be some minimal distance).

Recently I started thinking to replace them with something a bit smaller, and eventually asked myself why not get proper surround for gaming purposes?

Thus, I could use some tips and ideas.
Most of the time I just listen to music, movies I prefer in stereo, and really only would like to enjoy some of the new games in surround sound. Obviously, the front speakers would be the most important for me.
I wouldn't mind to mix and match the whole thing from different components.
I can imagine spending $1000/800eur on the whole thing if I could buy it in two parts over time.

Any comments appreciated.

I am fairly surprised how these forums are apparently not meant for helping others.

I was going to say something but then I just had to agree; this forum is not for helping others.

Might I suggest Google to find some other places where you can find help?

You might be better off with good headphones, and then using something like Dolby Headphone. It would save some money and space.
