Considering price, what game would you get?

I'm not going to play the game hardcore, just a few hours a week at most, what game would it be worth getting? WOW or Guild Wars?

If you're only playing for a few hours a week, I'd go with Guild Wars since the online play is free.

Guild Wars because it's free, but WoW would probably give you more immersion. Because of the level cap in Guild Wars, you'll be done with the adventuring part pretty quickly.

Just in terms of consuming huge amounts of time :)

I've avoided WOW, but from what I've read it's like the repetitive parts of Oblivion, e.g. going into the same fort or oblivion gate over and over. Grind grind grind.

Most people that stick with WoW seem to do it for the social aspects with their guild, which you'll probably miss out on playing a few hours a week.

You might be better off picking up other solo RPGs you might have missed out on, including old console games like the Final Fantasy series.

Considering FFVII is going for like $150 on eBay right now, you'd probably save more money with 6 months of WoW. :D

Between the two I would pick Guild Wars, and I did.

The game itself can be found cheap and the service is free.
If you play it for a week and decide its not deep enough or rewarding enough, then go for the WoW.

But I also like the idea of playing some quality single player RPG's. You may find you enjoy those more and in the case of the Elder Scrolls series, spend a lot more time.

Thats very interesting about FF7, I should ask my mom to dig up the instruction guide and mail it to me. I know I have it in one of those cardboard boxes.
I bet the eBay suckers would pay mad money.

I bought a used PSOne for $20 and FF7-9 for $15 each sealed on eBay.

As finicky as the PC FF7 was supposed to be about hardware, a PSOne or PS2slim might be a better idea. If your monitor has composite in you could even try playinng on it.

A PS2 would also let you play all the other console RPGs including FF X.

All RPGs have some grinding, but spending $15 a month on a new solo RPG would give you different stories, art, challenges instead of the same locations over and over.

I've played WoW for a long time and I can say that if you're not a hardcore gamer there's not a whole lot this game has to offer for you. The highest level is 60, and from 1-59 the developers dont care much about you. The instances that are available to you are hard to get a group for, and if you're lucky enough to get that far, you probably get stuck with idiots to make the encounter a headache. Quests that you get to level are neither efficiet or fun, and if you dont quest, you end up sitting off in a corner grinding a particular type of mob for hours at a time.
Dont get me wrong, the game does have it's perks. I just dont know if it's the type of game for you, based on what you said. It's a social game and if you're not going to put the time in to meeting new people, it gets boring. You might as well play a single player game, like many others have mentioned in this thread.
I have never played Guild Wars so I can't comment on that game though.

Guild Wars is very similar. Except it tops out at level 20. Most of the fun happens when you hit 20 and get into the mega-sized guild battles. I guess the only difference is that the main quest can be done entirely alone and is kind of fun. You can recruit bots in the towns if you need them.

It all depends on your taste. Keep in mind that Guild Wars isn't MMORPG strictly speaking.

For me, I chose Guild Wars. The gameplay really stresses on teamplay and your skills that doesn't depend on your equipment. There is simply no equipment or build that is the most uber l33t(...) because every single build has weakness that can be taken advantage.

I hated WoW when I tried via trial. I never even bothered with it after playing 2 days out of the 10 day trial. Simply too boring for me, and it seemed like the most important thing was to get the most uber equipment of the game (Sorry WoW fans, but that's how I feel). Plus there was no story that kept me enticed to keep on playing.

Of course, both have its pros and cons, but for me Guild Wars simply attracted me more than WoW. Plus no monthly fees!

In original guild wars, there are 2 4v4 (Random Team and Arranged Team) and 2 8v8 (Domination-style, CTF-stype, and guild vs guild) battles. In factions (standalone expansion) there's even 16v16 alliance battles. You can create a player that is suited for PvP right from the start (max level and equipment) if you don't like to spend time role-playing.

From what I heard about WoW (which I can't really comment about the pvp aspect) it seems like the scale is smaller. But there's so much intensity going on the battle that keeps me going back for more. Plus you can dive right into the PvP without even touching the role-playing side.

Battlegrounds in Wow are set up at 10v10 for Warsong Gulch (CTF), 15v15 for Arathi Basin (Unreal Tournament Domination-esque,) and 40v40 for Alterac Valley (UT Assault-esque.)

Not to mention world PvP, which obviously has no player caps. And next patch (I think) they will have cross-server Battlesgrounds. So, no, I wouldn't say that WoW has smaller-scale PvP.
