Considering joining the County PD but minor problem in past

I have contemplated joining the Police for a while now, and I never really took it seriously until recently. I've been looking into it and found the requirements online for it. I don't feel that much will be a problem except for one minor thing. My driving record...

I have to have less than 5 points on my license which I don't think is a problem I have less (or should have less, I'll find out in a bit) but the problem is that I have had my license suspended in the past over a speeding ticket (not wreckless driving) I mailed in the money to pay the ticket (I know always fight it to get it lessened, but I didn't have time to go in court) but something happened in the mail and they did not recieve it. I didn't recieve notice that it has been suspended because I was in the middle of moving around. I went in to get my license renewed and I found out it had been suspended. So I repaid everything and got it all straightened out. But the requirements clearly state that license suspension is an immediate disqualification.

Is there anything I can do? Is there any Police Officers here in ATOT that can answer a few questions for me? Should I just forget about joining or should I try to go talk to someone about it?

Is it saying that having it suspended in the past disqualifies you or having it suspended currently. Most department requirements I have read about require you to not to have had your license suspended in the past two years or a DUI in the past five.

Does it say "current" or "past" suspension? Don't plan on getting hired with more than one speeding ticket on your current print-out either.

The reason why your license was suspended could be brought up. They are probably referring to people who have been convicted of DUI and had their license taken away. I think (don't know) that if you got the documentation and submitted it with your application you would have a good chance of having it overlooked.

I have a friend who became a police officer even after being convicted of DUI. There is usually a way if you want it badly enough.

I've had about 3 tickets since I moved here 3 years ago I think one of them has been dropped off by now. I might call the HR rep and mention this and see what she thinks

Why don't you just apply? The absolute worse thing that can happen is that they say no or tell you what has to happen for you to be eligible.

As I mentioned earlier it depends on the department but most will allow you to be hired if your DUI was five years ago. For driving record it depends again upon both time and severity. More than likely if he really wants to get hired there he can and will.

The part of the requirements that harms me the most is vision requirements. Most require uncorrected vision of 20/100 or 20/200 and mine is 20/750 so I will have to have surgery after I complete my CJ degree.

yeah I'll give it a shot... they might over look it and if they don't they should bring it up so I can try to explain myself

Yup, I agree with Dave. Also, they may want you to explain circumstances of those tickets and may accept your explaination.

I can't see couple of minor traffic tickets will prevent you from going through the process if everything else is clean.

Yup I'll do it thanks guys 🙂 I guess I was just alittle nervous about it. Hells yeah I looked over an updated copy of the Requirements

1) Minus 6 or more points on a Virginia Operators License, or the equivalent for out of state license, at the time of application.
2) Conviction of Driving Under the Influence, Refusal to take Blood or Breath Test, Eluding Police, or Racing.
3) Reckless Driving or any suspension/revocation of driving privileges within the last 5 years for any reason will be reviewed on a case by case basis.
4) Any conviction taken under advisement will be reviewed on a case by case basis.

There is still hope for me 🙂 I'll apply and hopefully get in by July or Aug.
