Considering going SCSI! Help me decide which components to get!

I'm new to this SCSI stuff so bear with me. So what interface should I get? So many to choose from, and they all seem the same! 😕
Ultra Wide, UW2, SCSI-3, Ultra 160, Fibre Channel... and more I'm sure
What's fibre anyways, I haven't seen that format until recently? What kind of controller does it use?

Anyways I'm on a budger here, so the Seagate X15 is outa the question. All I need is 9.1GB's. Can anyone recommend me a 10k RPM drive?

Also, any recommendations on SCSI controllers and SCSI DVD drives?

Get a Tekram DC390-U2W 80MB/s (U2W) SCSI controller, unless you think that you will be using a whole ton of devices (like 4+ hard drives) you won't need Ultra160. If you happen to want Ultra160 get the Tekram DC390-U3W. Either card is backward compatible with all the litter SCSI standards.

The Tekram cards perform very well and are much cheaper than their adaptec counterparts.

For a hard drive I'd recommend a Quantum Atlas V, or as runner up an IBM 36LZX series. Both are available in 9.1Gig

Assuming you meant Budget, SCSI really isn't for Budgets. But anyhow.

yup, I second the IBM sentiments. I am presently running an Adaptec 39160 card, but both my Tekram cards ran well.

why are SCSI fibre channel hard drives so cheap? Also can I use a SCSI-3 HD on a U2W SCSI controoller like the Tekram?

SCSI isn't for the budget minded. Going with the guidelines you gave, the Quantum Atlas 10K II would be your best choice. Especially when you figure in the $25 from Quantum. Tekram should be you only choice for SCSI card. The DC390-U2W would be the wisest choice.

Internally, SCSI and Fibre channel drives are identical, basically the only difference is the external connector. The place you wallet feels it for fibre channel is the controller.

Yes, SCSI is backwards compatible.

Get the Adpatec 29160 controller, got some good prices on the FS forum recently.
I also agree with the Quantum Atlas II 10k drive, the fastest 10k on the market now.

That should have said $25 rebate.

SCA is an 80pin SCSI interface that some server configurations use. There is no cable, the drive plugs into a hot swappable backplane. The 80 pins include the power connector. You are definitely not looking for one of these.

Another recommendation for the Quantum Atlas II 10k.
If they were around when I went all SCSI I would have picked one of those over the Seagate Cheetah 18XL I have now.
The place that seems to have some of the best prices, selection, etc is hypermicro.com

As for the controller, like the other said, go for the Tekram U2W one unless you find a good deal on an Adaptec U2W or 29160. I think there was another thread floating around here with a link to some site with the Tekram U2W for onlt $127. Might have even come with cables. I forget.

I picked up an Adaptec 2940U2W with some great cables for $140 shipped. Where did I find such a deal? On the For Sale/Trade forum here of course 🙂
