Yup, you'll need it. I got jacked after my power supply on the mobo shorted right after my initial warranty expired.

Never got it fixed cuz it cost too much

Thats the exact setup i bought. I think its awesome, the screen is huge, and you can see it from every angle. My only gripe is its not very color correct.

Software is a b!tch though, but thankfully i just install my work's programs.

Go for it. But I don't think the extra money is worth it for the 1.67ghz Powerbook. Final Cut Pro is expensive, so you might want to consider Final Cut Express. I have it on my G4 and it is great. There are a lot of free software for Mac, such as Mac The Ripper, which a lot of people like, because it's a free DVD ripping program. I know all sorts of good free programs, but there are too many to list.

And it is easy to solve problems on OS X. I've only been on OS X for about 1 year (I've been on OS 9 past years.) and I can easily find what the problem is, and solve it. You just got to learn the OS, just as I had to. But keep in mind, I RARELY have any problems.

I've got a Powerbook 15" 1.67GHz, SuperDrive, 128MB VRAM, and 30" display, never looked back, great purchase. Switched with a 12" Powerbook, and loved it. Then moved to a G5, and here I am.

adambooth, thanks for the great info. a co-worker has a powerbook at work, and he's always complaining because of the lack of memory in it.. so I presumed that I'd get more out of paying for an extra 512mb of ram instead of the faster processor.

RAM is dirt cheap, go with 2GB and even if you don't use it you would future proof your machine a little bit more. But trust me, Mac OS X eats through ram like a hot knife through butter (but well worth it, and for good reason.)

[edit] And you have a year to add Apple Care to your machine, it can be added any time during your initial one year waranty.

Yeah, take these people's advice and don't get RAM straight from Apple. I got mine from NewEgg. They run a deal on the 1GB stick from time to time.

I don't have AppleCare, but I need to get it as my one-year warranty is about through. If anything goes bad like the screen, logic board, etc -- AppleCare will replace it. If you don't have it and something breaks down the line it can cost a LOT to get it repaired if you don't have AppleCare. I've also been looking into Safeware insurance (http://www.safeware.com). That covers accidental damage as well. I think I'll probably get either one here within the next few weeks.

I didnt realize how freakin' expensive it was to get just a 1gb stick in the powerbook... I just looked it up, an extra $350. That's highway robbery. I'll be getting 512 and then ordering the rest via newegg. Is it tough to open up and plug the other ram in? I've never opened my laptop (but I've built desktops)

It's easy. Four small phillips screws under the unit. A panel pops off and pop the RAM in. I think the 15" have two slots for RAM (my 12" only has one).

Good to know. The 15" do have two slots for ram, supports up to 2gb.
