No joke, just go to Costco and check out their chairs, they are about the best bang for the buck IMO.

Even Sams Club has some good ones.

You don't have to be a member to just on into the store and check it out and if you do decide that a chair there is for you then just pay for the membership at that point.

I've sat in a few Aeron's at work and while they're nice, I'd still rather have one of the chairs from Costco for the money.

Costco doesn't let you in without a membership card.

Though I believe you can get a day pass at the counter. But, seriously OP, go to a high end store like mugs did and see and sit in what else your money can get you . . . although spending more time in any one chair is best, like an entire day.

Which is where buying a chair online comes in and is the best option. You can't sit in a chair doing nothing all day. No place would allow that and if they did you would get bored very fast. Your not using your pc either so you can't get a feel for it either.

The store I went to let you take a chair home to try out before buying it.

They also aren't going to kick you out for sitting in their chairs for too long. I was there for at least an hour, and they didn't care.

I'm still trying to buckle down and buy a quality chair. $800-$1200 is just so much to spend on a new chair. Meanwhile, my current Staples model is falling apart at the seams, haha.

I've tried an Aeron and liked it. Not the most comfortable, but very ergonomic. I currently have my eye on the Steelcase Leap, but I'd really like to try it before I buy one. Plus my schedule has changed, I used to spend 12-14 hours in my chair (telecommuting + online school), but I'm back on campus now so it's not so bad. Check out Sit4Less.com - they have decent prices and a good reputation.

I look at it this way - a visit to the chiropractor costs me $75 and doesn't do a whole lot of good. Aeron fixed my back problems and has a 12 year warranty. Essentially it cost me the equivalent of one chiropractor visit per year for the life of the chair, and it helped a lot more than that. :) But it's not for everyone.

You can try out a chair from steelcase leap when buying directly from their website. They have a 30 day return policy I saw and free shipping to you and return shipping if you decide you don't like it. That way you can use sit4less for a different chair to try. Your only allowed to return 1 chair per a year with the free return shipping at sit4less which is good.

I would wait a few months. If economy is really slowing down, there will be many going out of business office furniture sales :)

Wow, I'd never buy a work chair like the Aeron for myself. Recliners are so much more comfortable. Especially the "zero gravity position" ones. I can easily use a book or a keyboard while in mine, so no reason to suffer a work chair just for desk access.

durable, and mesh ventilates well. a thousand here or there doesnt hurt my employer, especially if some crafty salespeople convince corporate that its better for our health

I bought and sold an Aeron. It was fully loaded, just not for me. $250 profit to boot.

I was seriously considering one for a while. If you spend 8+ hours a day sitting, I think it's well worth the investment to get something comfortable. Whether that's a $100 Costco chair or a $1000 Aeron is up to you.

I ended up getting this chair from Office Depot. It's not as configurable as the Aeron, but at half the price I'm pretty happy with it.

I have seen plenty on craigslist for $300-400 in excellent shape. I thought it would be a good idea since I will be doing a lot of sitting in the summer, doing bar prep. Is it worth the $400 though? that would be the most I ever spent on any piece of furniture.

Wow. $400 is pretty cheap for some furniture. Did you not buy a bed, sofa, entertainment center, etc.? Not that Herman Miller chairs are cheap or anything, I just found it surprising that you haven't spent that much on other furniture!

I used to have one in my office (the person that had this office before me had ordered it), but I found it uncomfortable and switched to a, well whatever the hell it is I'm sitting on now and my ass is much happier.

I bought one new, I love it, been using it for 3 or 4 years now so I've definitely had a lot of time to judge. One of the things I did do is remove the lumbar completely (just slide it right out). However, they have an improved lumbar these days so it might be better. I'm 6'6 205lbs for what it is worth. If you buy one, be aware they come in different sizes depending on the persons size, buy one too small or too large for you and you will obviously be less comfortable.

Despite the fact that I like mine so much, I do agree with trying one out first, but do keep in mind sitting properly can take some getting used to compared to slouching. And depending how badly you usually slouch, it will probably be your default position.

I'd like to think mine helped my back, but I don't exactly have any medical proof to back that claim other than my back pains going away over time and staying away. I wish I had one at work though, the difference between the cheap chair at work and the nice one at home is incredibly jarring.

Last but not least, one of the big pros of the Aeron is high humidity / heat environments, you won't sweat nearly as much and won't find your ass stuck to the chair.

I have one at work, loved it so much bought one for home.

Really worlds better than my previous chair and with a 12 year warranty, a pretty safe investment.

I would agree with the recommendation of trying before buying.
