Considering a Herman Miller Aeron

so here is the deal: I'm about to graduate law school and I want to award myself with a little gift. I was thinking about a herman miller Aeron chair (used of course). I have seen plenty on craigslist for $300-400 in excellent shape. I thought it would be a good idea since I will be doing a lot of sitting in the summer, doing bar prep. Is it worth the $400 though? that would be the most I ever spent on any piece of furniture.

I'm sitting in one right now, and it's overrated. If I wasn't so friggin' lazy, I'd sell the damn thing.

I suggest he tries it as well first. You can get a brand new one and try it for a month then ship it back all without any money without your pocket. Free shipping and return shipping. I did this with three different chairs so I could compare them all and was able to decide on the one best for me. Used ones you can't do this but I am not suggesting you keep the brand new ones unless you rather a new one. At least you will know before hand how each different chair is for free.

Sit in one, at a computer, and see how you feel.

I'd also take a look at the humanscale freedomchair, but good luck finding one for less than $400 unless you know someone humanscale designer discount is 70-80% depending on region

What about the other one everyone recommends here? I forgot the name. Does anyone remember?

1. Be aware that the 12 year warranty only applies if you buy it new.
2. It's a very good chair. I used to have tremendous back pain from sitting in my old chair. Went away pretty quickly after I got my Aeron, because the Aeron's back and seat are not constrained to a particular angle. Obviously this is a feature you could find in a cheaper chair.
3. Familiarize yourself with the features and upgrades; the chairs that are advertised as "fully loaded" on eBay are generally not "fully loaded." There are two basic models that you'll find at just about every store that sells them. The basic one ($749), and the "highly adjustable" model ($949) that comes with tilt limiter (great feature) and seat angle adjustment. To each you can add different features like upgraded wheels, chrome, lumbar support or PosturFit (which is more adjustable than the regular lumbar support pad).

If you decide to buy one new, consider buying it from a local store where you will probably be able to take it home for a test drive before committing to buying it.

You can do the same thing when buying a brand new Aeron online but instead for free. When you go get one that cost you money out of your pocket if you don't like it and have to bring it back. Not for the chair or tax but it still cost you money.

I have one, and I endorse these comments.

OP, spend some time in one and then see what else your $400 might get you.

I received one for free tried out for a few weeks and was not impressed for the close to $1000. Shipped it back free. Decided on a better different chair that did not cost as much.

If you spend nearly $1000 on a chair, do think think the money for gas to get to the store is a big factor? I went to my local Design Within Reach store, where they were very helpful and I was able to experience much more than I would be able to easily experience from an online store - different brands and models, all in one place. I would have gladly bought my chair (and my wife's) from them, because they provided me with a service that could not be matched. The one thing they could not provide was a chair in a timely fashion - they couldn't promise the model I wanted any sooner than 3 weeks, so I bought it online. I couldn't live with the back pain for another 3 weeks. But if I ever decide to buy another Aeron for my office at work, it'll be at the Design Within Reach store in Princeton.

You mentioned in a previous thread that you bought and returned ~3 different high-end chairs from online companies, and it ended up costing you nothing. I'm sure they really appreciate customers like you. That's not the way I do things.

What features does yours have, and how much would you sell it for?

Yeah but you see there is nothing wrong with it if you didn't like any of the chairs. I did not. If a company is really serious about staying in business they like to keep the custom happy. Sorry but business is not suppose to be easy. I also had to buy them online because there was no local stores who sold these kind of chairs in my area.

I had one - was beyond unimpressed - I was actually not comfortable. It is NOT made for people over 6'2" or so, I'd say. I have one now I much prefer and was less than half.

So? Try it first. And not just in a store - give it a day.

I love my Aeron. Just make sure you get the right sized one. There are 3 different sizes.

No joke, just go to Costco and check out their chairs, they are about the best bang for the buck IMO.

Even Sams Club has some good ones.

You don't have to be a member to just on into the store and check it out and if you do decide that a chair there is for you then just pay for the membership at that point.

I've sat in a few Aeron's at work and while they're nice, I'd still rather have one of the chairs from Costco for the money.

Costco doesn't let you in without a membership card.
