People are free to fly any flag they want. You would think that at the state level though governments would be mature enough not to want to support such a vile symbol.

I think the east coast should have the British flag on all government buildings and the south west and california should also have the Mexican flag on government buildings, lastly, Hawaii should be flying the Japanese flag on their government buildings. Why? Heritage and shit.

How? People are saying that flying symbols of racism and enslavement over your statehouse is a shitty thing to do, and it is.
Telling people who are doing something terrible that they are terrible people for doing it is not just reasonable, it should be expected. I for one am baffled that anyone WOULDN'T be calling these people out for being shitheads.

I find the confederate flag to be an offensive symbol. You have a right to display the flag, but it should not be a government sanctioned symbol flying on public property in this day and age. The confederate flag to this country is akin to the swastika to Germany, except the Germans have had the good sense and compassion to realize such a symbol really needs to no longer be a part of society for the good of all.

Maybe it's because a portion of the southern population that refuses to accept that the south didn't win and their refusal to recognize non-whites as full citizens has a very disproportional negative affect on other peoples' view of the south in general....
It's the shame of racists in the south because they are hurting their more pragmatic fellow southerners with their shit attitudes.

Who said anything about slaves? I want them given documents and worker rights. Meanwhile the South has a serious perception problem, and Confederate flag reinforces that.
Comparing the two is a little silly to me. Mass genocide, killing about 11 million. One didn't. Other than the symbol they can't really be correlated. The civil war was also not about just slavery. I don't really care about what they do with the flag, I have no ties to it. The knee jerk reaction to take it down because of some nut job killing 9 innocent people seems silly to me though.

The vice president of the confederacy explicitly said that their new government was formed on the principle that black people are inherently inferior to white people. I find the symbolism analogous.

The civil war was much more about slavery than it was anything else. The states themselves blatantly said this when they seceded.
There has been a concerted effort over the years to pretend it was about something else, because the legacy of slavery is so shameful. It's wishful thinking.
At some point people should just accept that the confederacy was a horrifying thing that the world is better off without.

Neither the Nazi regime and WWII were just about the killing of jews. Nevertheless, when you see a swastika you think about the savage deaths and torture of millions of defenseless people.
The confederate flag is no different for many people. When I see the confederate flag, I think about the deaths and torture of millions and I don't think I am alone in this regard.

On Dec. 24, 1860, delegates at South Carolina’s secession convention adopted a “Declaration of the Immediate Causes Which Induce and Justify the Secession of South Carolina from the Federal Union.” It noted “an increasing hostility on the part of the non-slaveholding States to the institution of slavery” and protested that Northern states had failed to “fulfill their constitutional obligations” by interfering with the return of fugitive slaves to bondage. Slavery, not states’ rights, birthed the Civil War.
South Carolina was further upset that New York no longer allowed “slavery transit.” In the past, if Charleston gentry wanted to spend August in the Hamptons, they could bring their cook along. No longer — and South Carolina’s delegates were outraged. In addition, they objected that New England states let black men vote and tolerated abolitionist societies. According to South Carolina, states should not have the right to let their citizens assemble and speak freely when what they said threatened slavery.
Other seceding states echoed South Carolina. “Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery — the greatest material interest of the world,” proclaimed Mississippi in its own secession declaration, passed Jan. 9, 1861. “Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of the commerce of the earth. . . . A blow at slavery is a blow at commerce and civilization.”
The South’s opposition to states’ rights is not surprising. Until the Civil War, Southern presidents and lawmakers had dominated the federal government. The people in power in Washington always oppose states’ rights. Doing so preserves their own.
Slavery was the root cause for secession and the war; Lincoln's election was simply the tipping point.
That may be and many other who share your view. Problem is, there is a sizable segment of our population who finds the symbol abhorrent, representing a history of flight, subjugation, and suffering. Recognizing the differences between the views, as a show of sensitivity and respect, wouldn't it be better serve to remove the symbol altogether?
While I'm not black (I'm not white either), even I'm uneasy whenever I come across a white person displaying it. I imagine that feeling is magnified many times over if I am black.

I don't think any one here has said a citizens right to wave around their flag/display on their truck or whatever should have it taken away.
