Well, why the hell do you have a soccer name then? I watch it on a Spanish station and when Mexico makes a goal the announcer goes:

SKOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORb.

hahahahaaaaaa....funny!!!!

I knew there was a reason I was enjoying the World Cup this time around. At first I thought it was just the sheeer enjoyment of watching train wrecks like the North Koreans getting stomped, or seeing England and France self-destructing in a cluster-f*ck of recriminations, but now I realize it is my innate hatred of Glen Beck that underpins my enjoyment.

It makes for good entertainment when he rages at least.

At my school, our soccer team consisted of a lot of great athletes that could have been stars on our track and field team. I'm sure the same could be said with a lot of high school soccer teams. I graduated high school in 2000, though.. so I'm not sure when you graduated and/or how much that has changed since you have.

I don't doubt any of that is true....especially at the high school level. I graduated HS in '92. I didn't follow much of the HS sports back then and couldn't say one way or another. I was mainly referring to the youth soccer (5yr - 10yr age group). I am sure once kids get older, getting into soccer will mean that you have to have talent---such as HS and especially beyond.

I think Rush and Glen Beck were the fat kids that were picked last for teams in PE, thus their hate for any kind of endeavor that requires athleticism.

Possibly, but Limbaugh at least is a huge football (American style) fan and a huge golf fan. I think American football and soccer are both highly athletic, although I watch neither, but just as very few American footballers could play soccer there are damned few soccer players who could play American football.

Off-topic quasi-rant:

The thing about American sports is that they seem to select for bizarro qualities rather than well-rounded athletic qualities. Look at American football. The quarterback mostly sits in the pocket and uses his dominant arm to throw (I'll admit they tend to be in great shape though). Linemen are obese and specialized to their task. (WRs and cornerbacks are probably the most traditionally athletic.) Basketball selects for insanely tall freaks. Golf (granted other countries play too) is basically guys standing around and at best walking to the next hole.

I'd really like the Olympics to re-focus on traditional well-rounded sports like triathalon and the like. I couldn't give a fuck about who the best skeet-shooter is. One reason I like soccer is that it seems like a purer game than the weird games we have.

But whatever it's a free country so people should watch whatever the heck they want to watch, including un-American sports like soccer.

Rush maybe not so much, but I can definitely see Beck being the kid that always had his glasses knocked off during dodgeball.

True, our sportsmen (except maybe baseball players) are specialists. Golf I don't even consider a sport - but I could make it one. All the golfers start at once, with a LeMans-style run for their carts (no caddies either.) The winner isn't the lowest score, but the first one to sink his ball into all eighteen holes. Now THAT would be a sport I'd watch. I could fix soccer too, just make the net three times as big and say goodbye to boring 1-1 ties. (I'm abandoning my previous idea of a ball that explodes after five minutes outside the net due to a totally unreasonable lack of support amongst soccer fans.)
