Consequences to playing basketball after workout?

I hit the gym 3 times a week, and once, sometimes twice, after my workout, I just can't resist the lure of the court.

Even though I always intend to play just one game to loosen up, an hour later there I am (hitting 3's :) ).

It's basically cardio, and I've always thought resistance training and cardio were to be kept on separate days.

Nope, you're pretty much doing it right. If you wanna do cardio, doing it after the weight training is best. You're fine, have fun. Learn how to shoot with noodles for arms! :)

It's all good. Generally our aptetite will go crazy through the extra exercise!

You may not get as good size gains if your doing the bball 2x a week though. That energy expended could have been for rest and recovery instead. BUT we need to enjoy life :D

i play ball before lifting because i won't be able to shoot if done afterwards.

is that not recommended?
i figure the worst that can happen is that i've exhausted myself from ball and won't be able to work out at full strength.

From what I've remembered, doing cardio beforehand exhausts your immediate energy (glycogen), which prevents you from having more energy to lift more (rep/weights). I think you become catabolic unless you intake some protein to prevent that from happening.

heh I remmeber in college when I would go play ball immediately after I did my triceps. talk about having a crappy shot lol. i would put it like 3 feet short of the rim for like my first 20 shots.

One good thing I've notice is my 3-point range has dramatically increased since I started working out. I can now consistently hit 21/22 footers in good form.

I always make sure I only go for layups for the first 15-20 minutes of playing bball after lifting, but it does suck when we initially choose up teams by shooting free throws, and I shoot like Shaq on his worst day.

I did this on and off in college. I would end up playing for 2 - 5 hours after my workout sometimes. I got to be in really good shape. I gained 20lbs of muscle at my peak compared to my weight at the start of freshman year, and I had a visible to nearly visible six pack throughout. I ate a ton of food though during the times that I was active like this.

I wish there was somewhere in this crappy town that people played bball on a daily basis :(

Regardless, I have done this before too, and although I didn't necessary get the best strength gains, I sure did get in good shape!

God, I'm still riding the high from playing last night. In the last game, my team was down 6-4 (we were playing games to 7, alternating 3 teams), and I hit 3 consecutive shots outside the arc to win it. On the last two, my defender was right in my face, and I was so "unconscious" that I didn't even know I was going to shoot it until it left my hand. There is just no match for that kind of feeling, compared to other cardio exercise. I know it's silly to brag about pick-up game accomplishments, but I'm just really falling in love with the game again after spending almost ten years without playing it very much.

I truly love the sport, and so it's with a heavy heart I hung up my hoop shoes on Saturday, March 29th, 2008.

I've battled a ruptured L5 disc in my back for two years now. I was in terrible shape the first year of being hurt, and took me another six months to get to the point I could exercise. The pain was so bad that I couldn't drive to work w/out stopping and getting out of my car... the pain was so intense I couldn't sit down and have dinner with my wife.

I'm now 6 months into weightlifting, and basketball was just killing my back. Before I started playing again, I was able to manage fairly well, to the point where some days, I couldn't even tell I had an injury. Now the pain is creeping down my legs again, having problems sleeping, etc. So definitely time for at least a very long break, if not giving it up altogether.

And just when I had found my shot!!! Not too long ago, in practice before a game, I hit 9 of 10 from behind the arc and about 15 free throws in a row.

Before my back problem, at 5'8" and in the clear I could throw it down on a regulation rim. Those days are way over.

Well, time to continue bulking up!
