HI everyone just was wondering what conroe is. I keep hearing about it everywhere. I have been living in Mexico and have not been keeping up with technology, so it is some kind of new processor ect.

It's the codename for Intel's new chip, Core 2 Duo. It should be about 15 -20 percent faster than AMD's current offerings.

don't they already have core 2 duos out? I'm pretty sure dell is hawking them. is it different than just the intel core duo?

Yup, they're different.

Core is codenamed "Yonah." (The duo means that it is dual-core, as opposed to core solo)

Core 2 is the next generation, with 3 basic iterations:

"Conroe" for desktops
"Merom" for laptops
"Woodcrest" for servers

They are all dual-core, hence Core 2 duo.

Conroe is what is destroying Intel currently, though it should help them recover a bit by next year.

When are they supposed to be out? And what does AMD have coming down the pipe to compete with it?

AMD have K8L as theur new core design. But this won't be released till early 2007 most likely the first quarter for Enterprise systems, and maybe within the first half of 2007 for the general consumer market.

This comes along with 65nm and single die quad core.

so conroe is an update of the old pentium m arch. on 65nm? wow, when i was building my last comp i remember all the talk about how intel moving to 90 nm would revolutionize things, very low power and speeds on netburst archetecture in the 4-6 ghz range. then nothing came of it and i haven't payed attention.

and when is intel getting an on die memory controller like K8? iirc this was responsible for most of the success of the athlon64

thats my bday :D

the whole reason why dell's XPS 700 has not shipped one single unit is because of nvidia 590 chiset will not be out until intel releases conroe, and then dell decided to release a xps 700 with intel 920 but has no motherboard to build the machines...

but a whole bunch of people, including myself, got in on the $1400 xps700/7950gx2/2407FPW deal last week. we're all waiting now :(

Teehee! AMD will have to sell me a X2 3800+ for <$200 next month. I love competition. :)

Hopefully... AMD kicked intel in the balls last time, and now they're on the ball.

Will Conroe support the same Vanderpool hardware virtualization like the Pentium D9xx class? Or will it be Silverdale?

I dont get the VT tech on the chips, when you can just run Virtual Pc or Virtual Server, with or without that on die tech.

I'm going to keep tabs on your posting. When you and your fellow AMD fanboys are left with your underperforming AMD CPUs you better not jump ship to Intel. Your fanboism is at stake here.
