Conroe owners ...

Alright ...

For those of you around here already running their system with a Conroe, how is it ?

Particularly in gaming. Does it make any actual noticeable difference in terms of performance/smooth game-play ? How's the heat ? Tried to over-clock ? Do you notice a worth-it-difference in overall system operating performance (3-D applications, multi-threading, gaming, etc) when compared to what you had before ?

I want you to exclude any web-site benchmarks/reviews. What I want to read about are opinions/comments/facts from consumers around here. What do you think of it ? Was it worth it ? Would it have been better to stay with your previous CPU and save the money ?

Basically I'm asking for a small, to-the-points review from Conroe owners. Nothing too long to read, just the necessary information from your honest observations.

Thanks for your time.

don't believe all the articles touting C2D to be much faster in games. it's not going to make much difference in gaming in the short term, where video processing is currently far more important. there are several articles on cpu scaling out there showing that cpu bottlenecks are pretty much inconsequential once 3.2-3.4ghz netburst or 2.2-2.4ghz a64 is reached.

the difference will be felt most on processor intensive such as video/audio encoding or productivity apps which do a lot of math calcs.

And who might that be? They aren't available to the public yet.

I've seen threads of people bragging about how they got engineering special chips of c2d somehow.

DOOOOOD, my new Intel Cornrow chip makes all the hair on my characters in CounterStrike THREE-DEE! It's amazing u gotta get one!! Mebbe get two and plug them into each other for 4D hair!!

😉

No Conroe here yet, but I picked up the mobo I will be using with it. Need to use this cheap mobo to tide me over until the Shuttle SN37P2 is released towards the end of August.

I wanted to wait for a better mobo as well, does this board have a normal pcie slot? I thought i read somewhere that it wasnt normal..... Guess im going crazy....

Don't forget running @ 120fps.

ES chips don't count. I have heard that there is quite a difference between those and the retail chips. But we will see in a few weeks.

Just out of curiousity, where have you heard this?

Generally changes made between steppings including the changes between engineering sample and production are minor.

The performance will be the same.

We'll also ignore the fact that many people have production / retail chips already 😉

No Mark, besides engineering samples. B-2 stepping retail CPU's that were up for purchase. Some folks jumped on them for the short lived time they were available, and some have received them. Check XS. I believe they were only E6700's and X6800's.

Well, for one, the only person in this forum that got a retail x6800 could only get to 3.2, but at XS, everyone else seemed to go way higher, There is a thread on is, too lazy to search now.

Well, hopefully Duvie will get his soon after the release date.

4x PCIe slot only. So if you check AT's latest Conroe roundup, you'll see this board fall behind when using highend GPUs. But at only $80 (cnd) what do you expect. As I said, it's a stop gap measure until I can get my hands on the Conroe compatible Shuttle.

The only people who have Conroe are probably all the people over at XS.

IMO, the best mobo out there for Conroe (and the only one I would consider) is the Intel Bad Axe. It has great OCing, 2x16 PCIe, Xfire support....

But I'm too poor for conroe. My Opty @ 2.75ghz is still strong.

cant wait till that conroe is goign so fast in your little case and it lights up and burns in flames and me whit my AMD Cpu will me laughing at your poor little conroe. MY AMD IS FAST whats 5 secs off launching a program goign to do...7 fps here and there . when there is 20+ sec off loading time and 20+ FPS and stuff then come back to me. right now no computer is getting any faster till HD develop
