Conroe - mainia, Intel 975X chipset, and SLI?

As I am going to build a Conroe system in the not too distant future, I was thinking about going with the Abit AWD9-MAX, based on the Intel 975X chipet.
On the USA page for Abit, it is stated that it supports Crossfire, well known fact.

But, is there any way today to get it to work with SLI? I know there have been hacked drivers in the past that allowed SLI on the ULI chipsets, are there still any such modifications available?

someone in the forums posted a link to a nvidia blurb..that stated they would "unlock" the 975x for sli. No indication as to when...or anything else

Um he's probably refering to you since you spelled mania wrong in your post.

Nvidia are going to have to allow SLI on other platforms because from what I hear of the new nvidia chips for conroe are that the fsb doesn't overclock as well as intel's or ATI's. I would just get a nice single card from Nvidia and wait for them to bring SLI to the other chipsets.

Ah, in the subject. That is true. My appologies. Was very late and I was quite tired when I wrote that.

Hopefully you are right about the SLI. I will not be able to afford two cards immediately, so will only buy one. Question is if I should go with a 7900GT (I have a 7800GT now in this machine) or hold off upgrading until next generation is released (when that will be). I have to think about that one. At the moment a Core 2 Duo are alluring, not only for gaming, but for the added speed when compressing video compared to current system.

I would hold off until DX10 cards. There are people with much worse cards then you that have decided to wait. My general rule of thumb is to upgrade at most once per generation.

Currently, that is my train of thought as well. Perhaps there are a lot of 2nd generation motherboards for Core 2 Duo by then, and perhaps there are some new versions of the CPU as well. Hopefully it will not be too long until DX10 cards though.

ya what ^^he said. I am waiting for DX10 unless those cheap x1900's get the best of me. I don't think I am going conroe because I feel like my money is better spent with a better GPU, plus I really like my LanParty board and don't want to change motherboards. Perhaps when DFI makes a nice LanParty with the rd600 chipset I will make the switch, but right now there just aren't enough good motherboards out for conroe to make it worth my while.
