conroe build gone wrong.. need help identifying problem

specs:
e6300(stock hs&f)
gigabyte ds3
1GB super talent ddr2
enermax 485w ps(ps sat a while without use during migration to conroe)
antec p180

symptoms:
with everything in it's proper place(and i double-checked), i pressed the power button.. and hear the fans turn over. good, the ds3 is not DOA. shortly after, i look inside the case and see that the cpu fan is not spinning. damn. i cut the power and re-examine all connections; everything seems fine. just in case, i switch the cpu fan connector to the ds3's second hookup. boot. still no go. damn again. now i am stumped. i cut the power and make sure the ps is set to 115 and not 220. it's at 115.

at this point, i'm thinking it's the ds3.. everyone knows about the problems many have had with this mobo. i turn the computer back on to further assess the problem. this time, the fans spin up(except for the cpu fan, which hasn't spun to this point), then everything stops spinning, waits a few seconds, and starts up fine. WTF?(cpu fan still not spinning)

now this makes me think it's NOT a mobo problem.. the system fans are connected directly to the power supply. i start the computer again.. system fans spin up for a second, stop, then star again like nothing happened(cpu fan still not spinning). for fear of the cpu overheating, i hold the power button down in order to cut power; this time, just before the power cuts(you have to hold the power button for 5 secs for shutdown).. about 4 secs in, the cpu fan spins up.. and then power is cut and it spins down. i power up again, wait, hold the power button down, and it happens again. i have ZERO clue what the problem could be. ZERO.

i thought that might be behind the cpu fan not spinning up, but that still leaves the sys fans stopping and then starting back up like nothing happend

So does the system fully boot up on the second attempt? On a cold boot, it's normal for a system based on the P965 chipset to start up for a couple of seconds, shutdown before powering-up properly. But this should only happen with a highly overclocked system.

i haven't let it boot up yet. i am reusing my old hdd with this new system. i was planning on booting to the floppy and wiping it and doing a fresh install untill all this took place.

Is your power supply a 20+4 pin psu? Did you remember to plug in the +4, and the other "normal" 4-pin cpu power plug? And yeah, it's normal for the cpu fan not to be spinning on some motherboards, when cold booting.

yes, it's 20+4 and yes, they are both plugged in

I would just let it boot and see if it posts properly. I had the same problem and was scared to death when my CPU fan didn't spin on boot, but then I noticed the fan likes to be off, then it spins a little bit, then it stops and starts again. My front case fans do the same thing on a cold boot. I have an S3 (no D), and it is at least the board, if not the chipset. I don't know if other 965p boards do it too, or just the Gigabyte ones.

what makes me think it is a faulty power supply is the fact that the sys fans are also doing weird things, and they are connected directly to the psu and should not be affected by the mobo, right?

but like i said, i am reusing an old hdd and every other part of the system is new, which means the old drivers that are still on the hdd are going to conflict if i let it boot, right?(before all of this happened, i was going to boot to floppy and wipe the hdd and do a fresh install. now, i am afraid to let the system stay up that long, however long it may take to wipe it/install xp pro again.. 🙁 )

Could you be pluging in the wrong connection to the 4 pin? It should be yellow/black/yellow/black. I just did something like that and had the same symptoms.

My DS3 did the same thing, so does my asus wi fi 965p MB. Annoying as hell.

I had them plugged in backwards on a previous build, same symptons.
