Curious to see how the prices turn out. It'd be alot easier for me to go and pick one up. Though I don't have a motherboard, ram, drives, case, video card and whatever else yet either.
 
That's why I'm hesitant to purchase a Conroe now. The Asus nForce 590 SLi boards are not out yet. I don't want to buy a conroe now and when i do get the board and other hardware required, I come to find out the Conroe CPU i bought is a lemon and I probably can't get it exchanged by that time.
 
Yep, it is looking like, for the stores that play by the rules, only the X6800 will be available this week. The Falcon Northwest site has this to say about their Core 2 Duo systems:

Reserve your Core 2 system now!

Extreme X6800 2.93GHz Systems will begin shipping on 7/27.
All other Intel Core 2 systems will begin shipping on 8/7.

Only reason I could think that Intel would do this would be to force the impatient folks to buy a $1000+ chip instead of waiting 10 days for a less expensive solution.

I wonder if the Aug. 7 date intentionally matches the start of Apple's WWDC. Steve Jobs is doing the keynote on Monday morning.

Maybe a new version of the G5 with a C2D in it?

Oddly enough I was actually wondering the same thing. I recently read a biography on Jobs and he has a way with being able to pressure other [larger] companies to give into his needs. I wouldn't be surprised if he announced new macs with the C2D.
 
*sigh* Darth Jobs strikes again... From suing people left and right to discouraging interoperability to pressuring Intel's release dates, he's got worse karma than even Gates...

Now I understand why Dell is going AMD... It makes perfect sense.

Dell is loyal to Intel for years. How do they get rewarded? Stevie Jobs comes along and gets Yonah first. Now it seems the C2D launch date is set to accomodate Apple again.

If I was Kevin Rollins or Michael Dell, I'd be pissed off HUGELY right now.

What the hell is Otellini thinking? Pissing off his biggest customer for some upstart who started buying from him 6 months ago?

But being an Apple user is cool nowadays, isn't it? I think Intel is banking on Apple becoming a decent PC OEM in the future. It may work but I still doubt Apple will ever hold more than 10-15% of the market.

Apple has successfully turned themselves into a maker of designer hardware for people willing to open up their wallet for sleek design. Kinda like Bang & Olufsen in the audio market, for instance.

Apple laptops have essentially taken over the college-girl-buying-laptop-with-daddy's-credit-card crowd, so right there that's reasonable market share. I suspect, though I think I'm alone with John C. Dvorak in thinking this right now, that Apple will eventually start shipping Windows. Most people (especially of the kind that Apple is now targetting) are buying their hardware for the elegant styling, not the OS...

And yes, what Intel must be banking on is the halo factor. They want to be able to gloat about how the much-admired elegant Apple hardware runs on their processors. But at what cost? They've alienated Dell, their biggest customer. They've probably alienated others.

And now I get to wait two weeks for my C2D because of Stevie Jobs. *sigh* No new iPod for me, that's for sure. I was thinking about upgrading to whatever new second-gen nano Mr. Jobs is cooking up, but NO MORE. I'm not throwing big money on Mr. Jobs' high margin product when he's the reason I'm stuck with my snail slow Willamette P4 for another two weeks, that's for sure.

It's posturing. Dell is firing off some warning shots across Intel's bow. They are saying that Intel better not forget that they're top dog and better continue getting sweatheart deals or else.

However Intel might not cowtower to Dell since Dell only seems to care about the low end of the market these days. Intel loves Apple because they're an innovator vs. a low end commodity supplier. Intel wants growth and innovation in the PC market and Apple/Sony/HP are partners that are probably showing much more potential then Dell.

It'll be interesting to see all this play out.

Dell might care more about the high end if Intel had given them solid product for the high end for the past few years! Besides, what about the Alienware purchase? Wasn't that intended to get Dell (back) into the high end?

Apple is skilled at marketing and packaging and design, but how are they actually innovating, except on the OS front (where MS has dropped the ball... )? Their Intel hardware is nothing but generic Intel laptop parts... i945GM, Yonahs, etc... nicely packaged up.

Funny how New Egg is trying to offload AMD CPUs at near the same price (before the Conroe bombshell) but throwing in a free Ipod in the deal.
