Connection trouble

Side Effect

Alright. I have 2 computers and 1 xbox that need internet connectivity. I have a hub I use to hook them all together. I have a cable modem that is linked to the hub, as well. One computer always has internet, the computer in my room (Wired to the hub with ethernet) isn't getting internet, and I can sign into xbox live (Also linked with ethernet). The hub is a "Gamester" hub.

I'd appreciate any help.

You need a router.

Go buy a router.

edit: specifics:

your cable company only gives you one public address unless you pay for more. each computer connected directly to their network (using a switch or a hub) needs a unique address.

To circumvent this you use a router.

What a router does is create a private network behind itself with a large repository of available private or essentially "ficticious" addresses as far as the internet is concerned.
Then it uses something called NAT (Network address translation) to translate your private addresses with your 1 real one. that way everything sent from your network looks like it is coming from the router, which is only using 1 IP. This llows you to use many pcs at home using only one public ip.

Sort of like having your roomates sending letters to all over the country for christmas from your house, but all with the same return address🙂

oh, and burn the hub....with gasoline if possible.

Use some Smirnoff for effect😀

Well, when I first hooked up the computer in my room, it worked, and the xbox didn't. Then I put in a mac address for xbox live and my pc's internet went out.

only 1 public ip so only 1 device will be allowed to connect. you can conenct a zillion of them if yo uwish, but only one will be assigned a public ip...

go buy a router

LOL.

Wireless Cable/DSL Routers these days actually cost less than a bottle of Smirnoff.

Unlike Smirnoff there is No Side Effect.😉

Have Happy Holidays. :music:
