ok, i'm running windows XP and it's as if only IE and trillian connect. i'm not behind any firewalls. a router but i've used that for 2 years no problem and have nothing else to hinder my connection. windows media player doesn't think it's connected, samurize doesn't, kazaa, and the trial version of norton i just downloaded.

IE, Trillian, and games know i'm connected that's it. sometimes IE doesn't even go to the site i type in. for a minute then it'll start working again.

Cable or DSL?

Is the XP internal firewall on?
Recycle the modem AND the router.... if that doesn't do anything, bypass the router.. regardless of how long its worked...

have you tried, releasing and renewing your ip. Do you having any extra network adapters installed i.e. firewire, dialup modem , anything that could be confusing your other connections? I take it can ping and resolve DNS with out anyproblems. BTW, you might try this in networking.

restarted the router once didn't do anything, figured i'd get this hopefully solved quicker tonight in off topic area. and the internal firewall in XP is off.

Norton, Zonealarm?

I know you said you aren't behind any firewalls. but - if either of these are on your comp and you've not configured them properly, they could be doin' some blocking.

XP eh? How about lettin' someone Remote Connect and troublshoot via XP's HELP function 😉

i want to install norton trial but can't cause it doesn't think i'm connected and no firewalls.. no zonealarm is not on.

tell me more about this "remote XP help"

Do a proper recycling of both pieces of hardware. Unplug the modem and router for 60 seconds... plug the modem back in, wait for solid cable, plug the router back in, and THEN turn the computer on.

IF that doesn't work, Rip and reinstall TCP-IP.

All the things that have been suggested here are very good suggestions....they also will give you some good suggestions over in NETWORKING. 😉
