Connection keeps going out

My connection keeps blacking out, and I dont know why. I have a cable connection with a Netgear RP614v3 router. Each time it goes dead, I restore my router settings and everything works for just a few minutes...then it goes out again. What gives?

Let me know if I'm not giving enough information....

how are you restoring your router settings when this happens? there are link lights, i assume they are still solid when this problem occurs? hows many computers do you have? when this problem occurs, can you ping the router and get a respone? your internet connection is the thing that goes on you every few minutes right? do you have the problem when connected directly to the modem instead of first connecting to the router, which connects to the modem?

Netgear allows you to save current settings as a backup in case of connection failure. Link lights are fine. One computer is connected to the router. The internet is just fine with the modem, but not so with the router.

sounds like the router since it only happens when the router is in the picture. try it again, but ping the router while its working, then once it stops, see if your ping fails or takes forever when you try and ping the router. how do you get the netgear router to restore the prior settings, is this when your logged into the router?

By going into the routers settings page. It has a 'backup' option. What it does is if everything is running smoothly, it has the option of saving a 'restore point' of sorts...a .cfg file. If something goes wrong, you can upload a previous .cfg file to roll-back your good settings.

I've tried this over and over...and I'm pretty much ready to just chunk the darned thing outta the window.

but both settings are exactly the same? why not just reset the router (i think netgear also has a button on the side) so everything goes to the defaults, then reconfigure the router, and see what happens. if you can access the router while the problem occurs we know that your lan port is fine at least, could just be the wan port on the router that gives out. you can try to upgrade the router's firware to the latest version also, that may fix it. how old is the router?

Firmware is up to date. Before I updated the firmware, the original one was from sept 2004. I bought the router this past summer.
