Connecting to the Zone through my RT314 Router (or how do I open ports)

tm37

Lifer
When I try to connect to games on the zone I cannot connect. If I take the router out of the loop and just go through the DSL modem, I can connect fine.

Now the zone says I need to have specific ports open for it to function
Zone help

How do I open these ports on my router or can I do this through XP?

I have 2 comps on the Network, one XP and one 98

can see in the setup of the router it has a port screen but I have no idea what any of this means.

Port screen on the router config software.

Any idea at all?

Please help me with this!

MSN Game Zone [support page] [DX support page]
(Watch Out! Opens a wide port range!)
IN TCP 6667
IN TCP 28800 - 29000

for DX play also open these ports:
IN TCP 47624
IN TCP 2300 - 2400
IN UDP 2300 - 2400

Those are the ports that you have to open according to this special applications port list. I'm not exactly sure that's the screen that you're looking for. This screen would be more like it. Just put in the appropriate ports, and you should be up and running. Hope this helps.

I don't have that screen.

And I read this

<< Question:
Does the RT311 or RT314 router support port ranging?

Answer:
Some online games and videoconferencing applications are incompatible with NAT. Our routers are programmed to recognize some of these applications and to work properly with them, but there are other applications that may not function well.

In some cases, one local PC can run the application properly if that PC?s IP address is entered as the default in Menu 15. If one local PC acts as a game or videoconference host, enter its IP address as the default.

Unfortunately, Netgear does not sell routers that allow "port ranging" at this time. Our routers will only allow punching through the firewall for eight specific ports. While this has become a recent issue for our online gaming and videoconferencing customers, Netgear has not released a router that supports this online gaming feature of utilizing a broad range of ports yet, nor have we heard of anything coming down the pike.

Does this mean I have to bypass the router.

Is there a better router for this application?

Again any help would be apprieted!

On that list that I gave you, there are ports listed for MSN Game Zone. I have the SMC Barricade router and I didn't have to do anything with it. Don't just go out and buy a new router because you can't get it working! Save yourself some money. I'm sure there's a solution. Have you tried clicking on the Advanced tab and seeing if you can find anything in there that looks like what I gave you?

I did clck on the advanced tab. and I got the link above That is from my router!

Netgear site says you can only open twelve ports🙁

I use a Linksys router. I know you probably don't want to go out and buy another one, but it lets you do about anything you would ever want.

I'm Thinking I may own one here shortl;y as well!😀

Try updating your Netgear's BIOS with the latest firmware (download it off their website), and your RT314 should allow for port ranging, which doesn't limit you to 12 ports forwarding.
