Is there a way to connect to the printer attatched to the desktop?

When I try to find the printer on the set up printer wizard in Windows XP on my laptop it can find the computer, but not the attatched printer, whats up with that?

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Edit: I get on the internet via the wireless router attatched to that desktop.

Did you share the printer first?

And, when you installed it, did you install it as a network printer? Follow up on Krose's suggestion. Control Palen, Printers and Faxes, and right click on the printer. In the pop up menu is "Sharing." Make sure it is checked and that the shared name is used by the latop for access to it.

My own situation is based on the fact that my printer has a Cat5 port - so I connect it to my router and then do a setup to it from each computer.

Yea i have it checked for sharing, and I have a shared name, but it still doesnt show up.

On another printer we had connected previously i could gain acces to it, do all printers differ on letting you use it over a network? I dont think that anything different was done with the other to allow me to use it.

Im just puzzled that i have it set to share but its not letting me.

This is a little off topic from my question but i have another one also, whats the difference between a router and a switch?

Thanks

Basically, a router connects two networks while a switch connects nodes together on a single network.

First make sure both machines belong to the same workgroup. Then, if the user names of the laptop and host computer are different, you must have the user name and password for the laptop configured on the host computer too, otherwise you won't have access to the host computer's shares.

You would want a router for your use.

Are you using XP professional or XP home? At any rate you should have a user name and password for the laptop and the desktop that you use to log in after you boot them, unless you have them configured to log-in automatically with no password. If the user names are not identical you will need to add the laptop user name to the desktop in order to access shares on the desktop. On the desktop computer go to Start > settings > control panel > user accounts > create a new account. Create a new user with the laptop's user name and password, if you are using a password. Now when you browse for a network printer on the laptop you should be able to see the shared printer on the desktop computer.
