Connecting to Domain Problem

On my laptop, and I believe other window 7 computers, it never connects correctly to my domain at school.

On the XP computers ( tablets from school) they join in the domain as they log in with the username. For my laptop, it seems to try and log in and then join.

this is a problem because I am not logged in with my username rather outside of the circle.

this puts on a block which limits almost every website and I can not access my Z drive. (storage space on network)

When I log in, it gives me a yellow exclamation mark over the wireless signal, usually makes me wait around 1 minute to go from "networks available" to " internet access". sometimes I get a popup message saying " you may need to put in additional info in the browser"

I have already tried rejoining the domain.

This is a bigger concern than just me, since the school is planning on going to all windows 7 next year.

thanks in advance

If it joins the domain, it joined the domain. If you're having a problem with wireless access they probably have some 3rd party tool managing those restrictions that needs updated or fixed to work with Win7.

If you got the tablet preconfigured from the school, it was most likely already joined to the domain. Do they allow any user to join their domain or do you need to take it to the helpdesk prior and have them do it?

I do not have the tablet. this is like a "transition year" with the program (1st year) so people with regular laptops can use them. this is an Asus EEE PC 1000h with windows 7 RC.

the tablets are fine, they have xp. the ones with win 7 are having problems. Only way to join is to have the mac address in the system, have the PW for network and then username/pw to actually join the domain. I helped set them up over the summer for the entire school.

How odd I've never seen a school join students' machines to the domain unless the laptops actually belonged to the school. Is this a University or some HS?

This doesn't sound like a Windows 7 issue, it sounds like a not configured correctly issue. If you aren't on the domain you won't get your shares mapped automatically, and if they're requiring auth for wireless it's not going to pass those credentials automatically. Does your school have a FAQ or anything for students to set up services such as wireless?

ya me. im like second in charge of the IT. like the student in charge. Neither I nor the actual IT guy knows how to fix the problem. he does have a guy that comes some times to help with the server but he hasnt helped much to fix it.

Check your default domain controller policy - there is a setting for who is allowed to join/remove PCs to/from the domain, and the default setting is anyone can do it 10 times.

It is possible that this may be changed to a specific user or role. By the way I was able to join my Win 7 notebook to the domain without issue.

high school. there is a program called dyknow that we use. and they also want to make sure we dont stray off and they can push updates of software and put programs on our comp, domain control is needed.

Windows server 2008, sorry this was late. needed to ask today in school.

the IT guy says that the problem is with the software and they are trying to fix it.

Yea, if your wifi is tied to your AD somehow then the problem is likely with that connector software. Joining a domain and joining a wifi network are generally two separate things.

Is it sbs 2008? I know, that if you dont join it to the domain correctly, it could cause issues that are random, like this. When you were signed in as the admin on the pc, and you were plugged in to the network, did you go to ie and type in \\servername\connectcomputer ? if not, then you joined the domain wrong and i would redo it that way. Sometimes, the shares arent carried over if you dont join it correctly.

well im in the process of dbaning, ubuntu/ virtualboxing win 7 on the netbook right now 😉 so I cant do anything at the moment, but I will try that tbirdkid
