Connecting through VPN

I have the VPN client and log in for my school. I can access my school drive from using Start >run> //path, but the VPN connection does not work in anything else.

I would like to connect to school's DC++ network, which requires a campus IP. Once I get the VPN client running, how do I get the DC++ to use the VPN?

Make sure all of the traffic goes through the tunnel.

How?
It seems like some packets gets bypassed.

When connected to VPN;
visiting whatsmyip.com: ISP's address
School's proxy = I can use it
connected through school's proxy = school IP

When NOT connected to VPN:
visting whatsmyip.com: school's IP
School's proxy = it won't let me use it

So, it seems to be working somewhat, but not everything goes through VPN apparently.
