I have been using my DSL line to get on the net. I decided to buy a router to run my wireless laptop. But somehow i can't connect to the net with the router to the DSL modem. DSL is from ATT/Yahoo. Does it have to do with bridging my DSL modem?

Have you logged into the router to set things up correctly? Does your dsl require software to authenticate you to use the dsl (it would be installed on your pc right now) or is the information programmed into your modem already? Most likely it should already be programmed into your modem already.

I have to logon with a user/password to get the DSL to work. I setup the router settings, by just plugging it in. Does it have to do with bridging the DSL modem?

There is no bridging to get this to work. Where do you logon to get the DSL to work?

You can't just plug a router in without logging into the router and setting it up.

Have your modem set up like they suggest (probably pppoe with your username / password). then make sure your router is configured to connect via dhcp and you should be able to connect via your router.

DHCP is enabled. Everything seems to be properly setup. But when I try to establish a connection, it won't work. Anyone have any ideas?

Is the modem plugged into the WAN port on the router? Most DSL uses PPPOE for the connection method. This will require you to enter your username and password. Some ISPs need your complete username, including the @ symbol and what follows (most likely the email address they gave you). Some routers make you hit the "apply" button on each settings page (on a small monitor, you may have to scroll down to see the button). And, at some point, you have to save all of your settings. The router will then reset. You may have to reboot your computer after that to get an IP address.

Modem is plugged into the router, then the router is plugged into the WAN port. Is that right? I applied the settings and saved them.

Try this. Open your browser. Go to tools>Internet Options>Connections. About 1/2 way down in the box, check, never dial a connection.

Your DSL modem probably has some routing functions built in and needs to be changed to bridge mode or something like that to work with an external router.

I had to do this when I setup a wireless router for a friend with Verizon DSL. Had to connect to the modem first (before hooking up the router) and turn off the router part and set it to I think it was called "bridge mode" but I can't quite remember.

There were instructions on Verizons site and in the documentation he got when it was installed detailing it.
