An option is to get a hub that either comes with one, or get a plain USB extension wire. This way she won't have to reach behind the PC or pull the PC out. Just unplug the USB extension from the HUB and plug the iPhone cable into the extension.
monoprice.com has them for about $2+shipping. From the sound of things your wife's PC doesn't have front USB jacks so maybe pick up a couple in case you need a second one later on.
I haven't tried the USB extension cables with my iPhone but I have tried them with other devices like MP3 players. No reason why it shouldn't work since it's not a HUB or other device and merely extends the line and USB plug there should be no compatibility issues. Should b pretty much the same as Muadib using the USB plugs on his monitor.
