Connecting a Mac to a Router

Will an Apple computer obtain IP from any wired router out there, or does the router have to state explicitely Mac compatibility? What about wireless routers (provided that the Mac has an AirPort installed)?

Definitely will work in OS X, should work in OS 9 as well.

Can anyone suggest an easy to understand online guide to configuring a Mac to dynamically obtain IP from a router (in OS 9 and OS X)? Many routers only come with PC-only instructions

It shouldn't be difficult to figure out on your own. In OS X you go into system preferences, select the networking section, select your adapter, and tell it to use DHCP.

yep, I could figure it out easily. I was wondering if there is a website that already lists the instructions step by step for the Apple users that buy a router from my store, and aren't too keen on figuring things out I dont have access to a Mac so it would be difficult for me to write out these instructions on my own.

If you have OSX just plugging it in will work fine because of DHCP. All consumer class routers have this enabled by default so you shouldn't have any problems. I can personally attest to this from using one at work.

With either Jaguar or Panther OSX with every Mac I have worked with I just plugged it into the router and it came up with an IP. It just worked great and the internet came right up. On OS8-9 there maybe a few settings in the control panel and TCP/IP I believe. The last G4 I installed 9.2.2 on it just came up and worked as far as the net. There probably is a guide somewhere. Try Google but with OSX I doubt you will need it.

You shouldn't have any issues with OS X as networking is set up to obtain IP automatically through DHCP so there's not really any settings to play with.

with X, it should be as simple as making the physical connection and opening a browser. TCP is by default set to use DHCP. In OS 9 however, TCP/IP control panel is usually set to PPP dial up. Change it to Ethernet Built-in and make sure DHCP is selected. You may even need to assign the router address as the DNS in order for it to work. A restart may be necessary for all settings to be saved as well. When you close the TCP control panel, it should ask you if you want to switch from PPP to Ethernet and also save. Yes on both accounts.
