Connect to Ubuntu box from Win 7 box

Hello,
Not sure if i'm in the right sub-forum.
I'm looking for a way to connect 1 or more users to login remotely to an Ubuntu system from Windows 7 PC's. Someone suggested VMWare but that's not free I think. I'm not sure how VMWare or virtualbox would be used for this. Thanks
 
Thanks for the info! Need to have individual users login remotely and interact with the system for training. Probably should be using Ubuntu server, but I think Ubuntu 12.04 LTS would work.
 
PuTTY for command line. PuTTY with X11 redirect in to xming for X11 on Windows.
Filezilla for FTP SFTP SSH.
WinSCP can handle the rarer SCP usage.
