connect problem with comcast

After a tech support call, nothing can be resolved. The modem, they claim, is working fine. I cannot ping anything without timing out. The modem adapter was removed and reinstalled, and the modem was recycled. They want to send a tech out next week.

Something strange, though, the subnet mask that's coming up in winipcfg (win98se) is 255.255.255.128 - I've never seen that mask number there before.

Anything else I can test?

What kind of modem? Using a router? A class d subnet mask is bad, you should have a class C of 255.255.255.0 or whatever. You could actually even give yourself a class A address if you wanted, but class D is only used for supernetting, if i remember correctly.

Most modems use DHCP, and if you're running one computer, or all computers are connected to the modem and not each other, you can use DHCP, and your modem *should* provide IP's to your systems on start-up.

Hi

Thanks for the reply.

The setting is (and used to be) "Use DHCP for WiNS resolution" in the tcp/ip settings for the modem. I have no router. Using one computer only.

I have a motorola sb4100 -- Its been working fine (other than occasional comcast outages) for 4 months now, then all of a sudden, about 9 hours ago, nothing. I have tried changing the subnet mask in the tcp/ip to 255.255.255.0, as that is what I believe used to be there. But the results are even worse when I try to ping an address; it won't even timeout.

So this subnet mask is obtained from the isp? I told the tech when I noticed it, but he didn't think much of it. He claimed that all across Pennsylvania yesterday, there was an outage, but I certainly didn't experience it. :disgust:

Oh, it may be simple.
Unplug the modem, let it sit a minute, plug it back in.
Comcast has been upgrading/changing stuff recently, and it sometimes causes your modem to hang.

No go with the unplugging of the modem- I even hit that recessed reset button on the back.

Still getting that odd subnet mask -- dialup access works okay.

edit>> if its any help, here's what the addresses are:

ip addy: 68.60.242.5
subnet: 255.255.255.128
default gateway: 68.60.242.1

Thanks. I'm goin to sleep

edit>> It started working again at 2pm with the same numbers as above - Comcast fixed something on their end

Thanks again for the help
